Hey Allen? I know you are the photography guru here so just a few questions because I was looking at purchasing my first dslr for my family...

Best Buy is selling it with 18-135mm DX Zoom-Nikkor lens - $1299
For just the body - $999
I was also thinking about the D200...

But for that $300 difference can I find a better lens? If so what would you prefer?

What are wide angle lenses good for? (10-20mm?)

Canon - EOS 12.8MP Digital SLR Camera? $3500? why?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Please PM if you like.

D80 is a great camera, but if you just need something cheap and easy to use, just get a D40. The D80 and D200 are very similar is function, but the build is different as the D200 is a lot more rugged. The only reason I am picking up the D200 is because of it's faster shooting rate for when I cover automotive events, and because I want to be able to use Compact Flash memory cards which enable me to use 8GB and 16GB cards. If you are looking for a good camera, just buy mine. All the shots you've seen of mine have been taken with this camera, and you will deffinently be amazed at the shots you will be able to take.

As for a good all around lens, there's one lens I could recommend for around the $300 range. The Tamron 28-75mm F/2.8 XTi which I also have for sale, is a sharp lens with great color reproduction, and a low aperture for shooting in low lights.

Wide angle lenses are good for shooting a range of different things such as architecture, landscapes, portraits, etc. It really just matters what type of perspective you want to give the photo.

Canon and Nikon both have professional SLR's in the $3500+ range. When you get to that kind of level, either SLR is great, but it's just personal preference. That high up, color sensors are more sensitive to color and give a much more accurate depiction of light and color in photographs. The Canon 1d Mark 3 also has a 10fps shooting speed which is utterly insane. There are also many other functions that i'm leaving out, but honestly i'm not even at a level where I need a professional level SLR so when it gets to that point, i'll look more into it.

Anyways, you should just buy my camera lol. Message me on AIM or PM me and i'll give you a good deal on everything you need to start shooting

Thank you so much for the info Allen. Since I am a newbie I think I will be doing more research for a d40 or d50 or possibly buy yours.
