Lightbulb turbo engine swaps into previous imprezas?

ok, those of you who live out here in Cali and are familiar with our laws regarding engine swaps know that it's legal to swap an engine from a later-model car into an earlier-model one as long as all the emissions equipment is present and the smog referee approves (such is the case with my '87 VW GTI, which started life out as a 1.8 8-valve motor and now sports a 2.0-16v).

now that the WRX has arrived, has anyone looked into the possibility of transplanting a 2.0 flat four from a foreign-market Impreza (turbo, wrx, whatever) into a previous-model car?

i'm aware this undertaking would be more complicated than a first glance would suggest, because of the veritable cornucopia of smog equipment on the new WRX (3 cats, "tumble generators", etc etc)... but i simply can't stand the looks of the new WRX, and the idea of buying an earlier base-model Impreza Brighton or L and then basically transplanting a 2.0L-turbo engine/transmission into it sounds like a fun project.

Imotors.com says they can get me a '97 impreza brighton for a little under $12k. Compared to the option of buying a new WRX, that gives me nearly another 12 grand to play with, not to mention that the lower monthly payments would facilitate the project by freeing up more money per month...

thoughts?

You would need a new crossmember, exaust, a custom intake, and an engine management system.(Wolf, Link, Tec II) Try SubaFastRacing.com for some info.
