Default Best MY for Forester XT

I'm looking to get a turbo Foz. What years are good?

Also this will be my first turbo charged Subaru. What kinda reliability is there with the turbo flat 4? What mileage would you safely buy a turbo Forester?

I'm a huge fan of the SG's. Specifically the 03 and 04

Mileage isn't really the scary part. Maintenance records are more important, imo.

At the end of the day, the two most "moddable" years is 04 and 05, but I am a bit biased in my opinion.

I missed my chance on buying one twice.
I won't let it happen a third time.

04 IMHO is the best year. First year turbo, with STi motor, and no special key.

I jumped on the chance to buy mine. I got lucky though and got first crack at it. Great car though, I've only changed a few things so far just to enhance the performance slightly

The 04-08 xt are all the same modding wise. The only difference are the 04-05 headlights are different from 06-08. Also if you get an 04-05 make sure you get an aftermarket or oem catless uppipe as the 04-05 oem uppipes have cats that are known to break up and cause damage.

I'm looking at a 04 XT right now. Anything I should be looking at or for besides maintenance records?

Check oil level/color on the dipstick. Check coolant in the overflow and res, i would imagine color should be green.
Check front diff/tranny dipsticks (only one if its a manual, two if auto.)
Power steering fluid too. I like to check those to see color of fluid and also to make sure they arent low, which may lead me to believe upkeep wasnt so good.
Check the ac. Make sure it blows cold at idle and while driving.

Thanks,
I test drove that XT today and it was running great till it stalled 3 times for no reason all while driving slow.
Had a little smoking from the drivers side of the radiator and it looked like something was wrapped around the y-pipe from intercooler to turbo which I've never encountered before with Imprezas.

2008 Sports is the only one to get blacked out headlights/tail lights, the best stock wheels and the is last year for a manual. 06+ gets AVCS and a few more hp/tq than 04-05. If it's your speed, the 4eat is miles better on the SG9 than the SG5.

Congrats!

I REALLY don't want to, but I might be broadening my search to automatics...

There are 2 locally to me, one is a black 04 XT and a blue 07 XT. Both with 130k and price roughly the same.

Any opinions? I really want manual but man I need one soon and can't find a decent one.

Hold out for a manual. You'll be much happier you did. Took me forever to find mine and I had to travel out of state but it was well worth it.

I hear ya but I'm on a time crunch. My current work vehicle is really breaking down more and more every day. I don't know how much longer it's going to last. It has 251k and counting.

What's your price range and requirements? Most of the deals I've seen are over there on the east coast. I'll pass along any decent ones I find.
