Default Question about offset for rims?

What is offset and will a 48 rim offset still fit on my car which i think has a 55 rim offset (stock '00 2.5rs wheels 6 spoke)

Will it affect the feel/ handling of the car?

Any info would be greatly appreciated. I'm looking to purchase a set of rims which are 17's with 48 offsets.

tirerack explains offset much better than i can:

http://www.tirerack.com/wheels/tech/offset.htm

the 48mm wheel will fit your car. will it noticibly affect the handling versus a 55 or 53mm offset wheel? i dunno.

what width wheel are you looking at? i'm not sure sure if there are rubbing problems running a 7.5" wide wheel, 48mm offset on the gc impreza. but a search would probably turn up the info.
