ugh, down pipe is going to be a bitch. i have never done it my self but i have heard that cutting open the pipe and then welding it back together is in order. i may be wrong but it may be more cost effective to simply buy a used HKS down pipe (like what i have) for 90 dollars or so.
the up pipe is a different story. get a vice and a drill with a big long nasty bit. drill multiple holes in to the cat, then get a large metal punch (or a long screwdriver that you may not care very much about) and take a rubber mallet and punch it through the cat that you perforated, after a while depending on how many holes you put in the cat... pieces of it will start to fall out. You want to scrape every last bit of cat out of that pipe because it feeds the turbo. some people take a dremel extension and buzz out the inside to make sure there is no cat left in there. up pipe will take 2 hours or so your first time if you do it right. |

What I do when I gut a cat is drill as many holes in it, then take something big like a jack handle and punch it out with that. You'll have alot of big chunks that won't fall out of the pipe, but some needlenose pliers will do the job. Then polish away. Takes me about 45min-1hr to do one.

may be a good idea to wear a resperator or something, i have no idea what chemicals are in a cat, but i am willing to bet that along with "gangsta gangsta platty" there are probably things that will make you develop lumps all over your body and liver failure over time.

CATALYTIC CONVERTERS. The catalytic converter is one of the most important emission control components because it cleans up emissions that the other controls miss. The converter contains a monolith (one piece) ceramic honeycomb or ceramic pellets coated with a thin layer of catalyst. In "two-way" converters (one that reduces HC and CO only), the catalyst is platinum and palladium. In "three-way" converters and "three-way plus oxygen" converters, a third catalyst rhodium is added to reduce NOX.
all of this came from here http://www.babcox.com/editorial/cm/cm109852.htm |

pulling the down pipe? how hard? well the first time on a stock car it is a pain due to the heat shields. but still it is not THAT hard really. i mean there are a dozen little nuts that crazy japanese designers tried to hide all over the pipe but if you have one of those neato gear wrenches you can fly through it. PB blast the what, 5 bolts on the turbo side, and you are already over the hump. remember to unhook the O2 sensor connector before you drop the pipe, dont take it off with it up in the car cuz it is easier to strip.
On a scale of ten with regards to newbie car mods and the potential for disaster with 10 being a cracked hard brake line after a botched SS line install. I would say that pulling the down pipe is a two or three. very easy. pUlling the stock uppipe is a little rougher, people say you dont have to unbolt the motor and jack it up to pullit out, but i have not figured that out, so with me there is always a risk of rounding off a motor mount nut (hi Shandra). Easy stuff man if you have even a basic tool set, REALLY easy if you have a can of PB blaster and some gear wrenches. Erik |
