So an anonymous neighbor thinks my STI is too loud...
So I get this letter in my mailbox today from a neighbor that doesn't appreciate the loud noise my TurboXS exhaust makes. I get it that it is louder than most vehicles out there but the fact they couldn't even come talk to me face to face is what really grinds my gears. I'm a personable guy and would have rather had tell me in person so I could know who I offended and offer my apology and try to resolve it between us. What do you think?
Update: When I got home today I seen my neighbor across the street outside and asked her if my car was too loud for her in the mornings. She admitted that she wrote the note and explained a little further that the worst part was when car first started up, and a couple days ago I came back a few minutes after I left because I forgot something and left it idle outside the garage. I apologized for the past few days and last night I backed into my garage and started the car before opening the garage. Also drove as slowly down the neighborhood. She said this morning she didn't even notice and it was fine. So, looks like a good easy solution for both of us. I'm glad I got this straightened out and feel better that both myself and neighbor have a solution. Last thought, she is one of the neighbors that my wife and I have rarely talked to, so I now see why she would have wrote a letter in the first place. They're more of a keep to themselves type and that's fine. I'm just glad it's solved. Another update: Ran into another neighbor across the street from me, asked if she thought my car was overly loud and she said no way, she loves it and it never disturbed her in the morning. Apologized anyways and said if there was ever a problem to feel free to let me know. She also said she got SEVERAL anonymous letters in the mail about matters which she didn't discuss with me. I guess the person writing these letters gets easily offended and I'm just going to try to be as neighborly as possible. Last edited by d0wnShifT; 03-27-2013 at 06:47 PM. Reason: update |

Sounds like you should do something more reasonable for your exhaust.

Now for my response.
First: So, so, so, so, so. So. Stop saying so. Second: They wrote you a very polite note. Avoiding confrontation by writing the note rather than talking to your face is the polite, kind thing to do. There is nothing wrong with that. Third: You should do everything you can to mitigate the problem. If you are starting a loud STI with TXS exhaust at 4 or 5 AM and waking the neighbors, you are a dick. Quiet your car. My Legacy isn't quiet, but I also don't head out until 8 AM so it's hardly an issue... by that time, school buses are driving by. |

I thought it was very polite, and even though I own an STi and appreciate the sound of a great sonorous exhaust note, I too would be fairly annoyed if my neighbor woke up my kids at 4:30 in the morning. Regardless of whether it is spring break or not. It sounds like they are trying to be very polite in their request. They could have just called the police... would that have been better? |

Reading between the lines it appears that not driving like a dillhole early in the morning would solve the problem.

I'd take the last option. Try and keep the RPMs as low as possible. I dunno about your STi, but I can usually keep the RPMs around idle on a relatively flat surface while pulling out of my driveway.

Ricer!
I'd get exhaust cutouts and make it louder. Show them that "loud" is a relative term. |
