Noise complaints from neighbohrs and police visit
For reference I have an 05 STI with an invidia G300 CBE, downpipe and uppipe. I leave for work every morning at 430AM and drive very slowly through the neighborhood. A few weeks ago I had a cop show up at my door saying that someone had complained of being woken up by my car. He checked out the car, had me turn it on and rev the engine. He commented that the car was loud but that it was in working order and not in violation of any law. Then a few days ago I received an anonymous letter from a seemingly different neighbor siting some code that says I need to have a working muffler etc and that it cannot be excessively loud. The letter stated that I need to make "repairs" and or else they would get the police involved.
I do kinda get that my car is loud and that I am driving it through the neighborhood really early and that might be annoying but I am also pissed that I am getting these anonymous letters/people calling the cops instead of just knocking on my door and speaking with me directly. What do you guys think? Should I do something about it? What options do I really have? Is there a cheap way to fix this that won't affect my performance? Personally, I don't really care too much if I am waking people up because my car is 100% legal and I am crawling through the neighborhood and whoever is complaining doesn't even have the balls to ask me to my face... However, my wife feels differently and doesn't want to be "those people." Thanks for the input! P.S. I live in suburban Ohio. |

WHOOOOOOOOO!
If I got woken up by a scooby at 4:30 in the morning, I'd smile and go back to bed I'm amazed that the cop didn't give you any problems. I thought Ohio cops were notorious for being pooey, although maybe that's only to out-of-state drivers. Oh - and I define econoboxes as little tiny 110 hp FWD things (geo metro, crx), not 140 hp AWD midsize sedans/wagons. AWD is not economic by any means XD Last edited by Heeltoeclutch; 09-09-2011 at 01:45 PM. |

Dont do anything. The Police already checked out your car and said it was legal. So i dont see why you would have to do anything about it.

Just get a silencer. Only use it in the mornings.
Don't buy it just yet though, wait until they have the decency to talk to you in person. Or, go talk to them! Also, ask if they can pitch in on the silencer. Last edited by damonchoy; 09-08-2011 at 03:51 PM. Reason: I'm an ass. |

Get a slip in silencer. Or an EWG and bounce off the rev limiter at WOT all the way out of the neighborhood.

Get a quad-hella setup and scare the "deer and moose" that are in the road. See how that works.

Sort of off topic here, but how on earth do guys on Harley Davidson's get away without riding with pipes without getting ticketed? Is it an age difference thing or something?

Hopefully it will all blow over, but you shouldn't have to do anything about it. Although, to be more on the conservative side, you could always find someone to swap cat-backs with you if you wanted something a bit quieter. I swapped my Invidia N-1 with someone for a Stromung and couldn't be happier.
I'd only do that as a worst-case. If you like the way your car sounds, then screw them. I used to live in a massive apt. complex and left for work at 530am with full 3" catless, invidia N-1, up-pipe, headers, EWG and never got a single complaint. I think your neighbor is just pissed that his wife won't let him get a car as nice as yours. |

I agree on this... how do motorcycles get away without mufflers, but cars can't? The god damn Harley that rips up my street (well over the speed limit, mind you) every damn day is way louder than any car I have ever heard.

They get tickets just like every one else, it is just that you are not likely in that demographic, therefore you don't see it. I have been turning wrenches on motorcycles both professionally and leisurely for going on 20 years. Sport bikes, metric cruisers, customs, Harleys.... I have listened to all of them give me their loud pipe ticket sob stories. I have been pulled over and been talked to but never been ticketed on my own bikes and customers, but by all rights should have been. In my younger days I had a go around with a neighbor a block down the road I had to go by to get into my area of the neighborhood. He worked nights. I could come home, park the bike, go inside grab a drink and meet an officer at the front door like clockwork. Every damn time I went by his house. The police didn't think the exhaust was excessively loud, but I will admit it was loud and had a lot of bass to it even at low loads. Went on like that for an entire summer until he called the police make a report at which time an officer showed up at his place to hand him a citation for harassment. It seems that making several illegitimate police reports(since the police didn't have an issue with the loud pipes) will get you a ticket. A few years after that, one of the neighbors had a new born that would wake up when I came home at night. He asked me to keep it down. So I decided to come into my neighborhood via another route to avoid his house. For two years I took the long way home to keep the peace between us. If you want what some may consider a loud exhaust, be prepared to pay a ticket now and then. You got to pay to play. |

Yet everyone is OK with the 20 something kid with a Evo that is much louder and deeper sounding then the Neon and therefore some times rattles the windows. Why, this guy at least puts by at 20 miles an hour, only into the throttle as much as needed. |

They do it for the same reason the OP does, for the sound. Personally, there is a place for a loud exhaust, but it isn't on the street, regardless of what you drive. |
