Default Noise complaints from neighbohrs and police visit

For reference I have an 05 STI with an invidia G300 CBE, downpipe and uppipe. I leave for work every morning at 430AM and drive very slowly through the neighborhood. A few weeks ago I had a cop show up at my door saying that someone had complained of being woken up by my car. He checked out the car, had me turn it on and rev the engine. He commented that the car was loud but that it was in working order and not in violation of any law. Then a few days ago I received an anonymous letter from a seemingly different neighbor siting some code that says I need to have a working muffler etc and that it cannot be excessively loud. The letter stated that I need to make "repairs" and or else they would get the police involved.

I do kinda get that my car is loud and that I am driving it through the neighborhood really early and that might be annoying but I am also pissed that I am getting these anonymous letters/people calling the cops instead of just knocking on my door and speaking with me directly.

What do you guys think? Should I do something about it? What options do I really have? Is there a cheap way to fix this that won't affect my performance? Personally, I don't really care too much if I am waking people up because my car is 100% legal and I am crawling through the neighborhood and whoever is complaining doesn't even have the balls to ask me to my face... However, my wife feels differently and doesn't want to be "those people."

Thanks for the input!

P.S. I live in suburban Ohio.

Dont do anything. The Police already checked out your car and said it was legal. So i dont see why you would have to do anything about it.

Just get a silencer. Only use it in the mornings.

Don't buy it just yet though, wait until they have the decency to talk to you in person. Or, go talk to them! Also, ask if they can pitch in on the silencer.

Hell, slap on an Invidia N1 Race or Blitz Nur Spec R and start doing 6k revs at 3am! Okay, kidding about that part...
Yeah G200. I do pull away slowly but it isn't silent. Other people (wife, relatives) say that even pulling away slowly they can hear me from several blocks. Keep in mind it is dead quiet at 430am in my neighborhood.

Get a slip in silencer. Or an EWG and bounce off the rev limiter at WOT all the way out of the neighborhood.

To add to this, might not be a bad idea to get a card or something from the officer who checked it out and said everything is compliant. And keep any and all letters or complaints. You can use all of that to prove you're being harassed later should the need arise. Hopefully it just blows over though.

....although I got a good deal on my catback from a guy in a similar situation he now has an electric cutout.

Get a quad-hella setup and scare the "deer and moose" that are in the road. See how that works.

Sort of off topic here, but how on earth do guys on Harley Davidson's get away without riding with pipes without getting ticketed? Is it an age difference thing or something?

Yeah, I mean, I think a large part of the issue is the time I am leaving...430 in the morning.

Not sure about the age thing, I'm 29, not a spring chicken.

I have neighbors who are "those people". They rev up their old Cuda EVERY DAY for an hour. They don't drive it. They let it idle, rev it up many many times. It either stalls or they turn it off, then 5-10 seconds later, they turn it back on. Nobody on the street likes them. I wouldn't want to be "those people" either. It seems like you are stuck between a rock and a hard place.

Hopefully it will all blow over, but you shouldn't have to do anything about it. Although, to be more on the conservative side, you could always find someone to swap cat-backs with you if you wanted something a bit quieter. I swapped my Invidia N-1 with someone for a Stromung and couldn't be happier.

I'd only do that as a worst-case. If you like the way your car sounds, then screw them. I used to live in a massive apt. complex and left for work at 530am with full 3" catless, invidia N-1, up-pipe, headers, EWG and never got a single complaint. I think your neighbor is just pissed that his wife won't let him get a car as nice as yours.

Yeah.. I am not doing anything like that. I do make an effort to be respectful but like I said even at slow speeds you can hear me from 2 blocks away at least.

Lame. I always felt bad coming home late at night with my exhaust. I was lucky enough to have neighbors that didn't complain, however. I think your situation depends on how you feel about your neighbors. If you like them, and are worried about what they think of you, then you might have to change your exhaust or get a silencer. If you don't care what your neighbors think of you then leave it how it is!!

I agree on this... how do motorcycles get away without mufflers, but cars can't? The god damn Harley that rips up my street (well over the speed limit, mind you) every damn day is way louder than any car I have ever heard.

What is this electric cutout deal? Is that a joke or something that might help my situation?

I would do this if they weren't anonymous.

The cop said it's legal, I assume it has passed inspection (if your state has them).
So really it's a car that's legal.
I wish I could get the cops to ticket the bikes and cars that drive up and down my street at WOT (thru at least 3 gears in a 30mph zone) every night between 11 and 3am.

There's a guy down my street with an older RS and some kind of swap, he's babies it all the time, even mid day. I think I heard it WOT like one time. It's got a loud exhaust on it (might even be a straight pipe), but the way he drives it most people wouldn't know.

How about just getting a stock catback. Does that really effect performance. I've always heard a negligible 1-2hp. I thought it was more about sound than anything else. If you want it for the sound, maybe you are one of those people.
