Default Hail damage...repair or pocket the money? ($5,200)

Had a horrible hail storm recently in NC, comprehensive has a $500 deductible, I can live with the damage and wouldn't mind keeping/investing the insurance payout. My 1st estimate was $5,200 in damage. It's a 2007 WRX, stock, 45k miles. The damage is on the hood and roof mostly, some on trunk too.

I plan to keep the car another 5 years (until it hits 100k about). I think I would make out better by keeping the money and not repairing it.

What would you do, and why?

Also another question...should I get a few more estimates, and go with the highest, so I can pocket the most?

It never hurts to get more estimates. 5200 is an awful lot for hail damage... You should take some pictures and post them. Hail is hard to get good pictures of, but with that kind of damage, I am willing to bet its viewable.

Doubt they are just going to let you just pocket the money and not pay anything toward repairs...

In most states, they will. As long as you don't have a loan out on the car.

If the hail dammage doesn't bother you, take the money. The insurance company will take that into account for any future claims on the car. So, for example, if the car is in an accident and totaled, they'll subtract that $5200 from your payout. If you don't mind the dammage, drive it into the ground.

If you pocket the money and don't fix the car, if you get hit/hit something and they do another appraisal be prepared to take that $5200+ hit on car value. They may total it because now it's worth $5200 less because of the pre-existing damage.

you got an estimate, but what did your insurance company say about the estimate? If they're offering you $5,200 cash, take it, because you can get your car fixed for a lot less.

That said, a shop could estimate the repair at $10,000. It doesn't mean your insurance company is going to pay it.

Keep in mind there are literally thousands of people & companies who swarm over disaster sites to gain a buck. whether your insurance company plays nice with them is what matters.

Not entirely true scotty. Aluminum is repairable, and some pdr guys are good enough to push it.

Take the car too a shop, let them give you an estimate. Insurance companies WILL rape you expecting you to take the offer and run. You can talk shops into replacing it with cf panels or whatever you want as long as you can figure a way to not take out of their pockets.

Fixing cosmetic damage is for suckers.

Rather have a ****ty looking fast car than a nice looking slow car.

Well that's your opinion. Not everyone can allow themselves to let their car look like ****.

State farm insurance, and my car is fully paid off. I'll just fax this $5,200 quote to them and see what they say. I took it to a body repair shop that State Farm said is authorized repair by them, so I don't think they will deny the estimate cause it was the place of their choice.

Good luck if you decide to get it repaired. I had a terrible experience with the body shop that repaired my hail damaged WRX.

They did a good job replacing the panels and matching the color to OEM, but every other aspect of the repair looks like a 12 year old did it.

- the shop scratched the hell out of the blackouts around each window while buffing
- scratched the new paint down to the metal in several places
- broke plastic interior covers and tried to stick the broken pieces on with what looks to be caulk
- left epoxy and hair on my window
- creased my headliner and got it dirty/oily when putting it back in
- didn't install a lot of interior trim / panels correctly
- scratched my dash
- scratched my leather seat

All of that took them a month to complete. Then it took them another two weeks to fix their mistakes. It looks OK now, but my car will never be the same.

Sounds like the autobody itself was just incompetent.

since the car is paid off...pocket the $$$...then switch to liability only coverage and drive carefully and save a crap ton of money on insurance. Once you decide to get rid of the car, you would have pocketed ~$10k.
