Yet everyone is OK with the 20 something kid with a Evo that is much louder and deeper sounding then the Neon and therefore some times rattles the windows. Why, this guy at least puts by at 20 miles an hour, only into the throttle as much as needed. |

I'm not suggesting a physical confrontation, but I have issue with people who are concerned enough to call the police and write an anonymous note, but aren't mature enough to talk to me like a normal socially adept human being. |

The bottom line here: The more incentive you give your neighbors to hate you; the greater the lengths they'll go to make your life miserable.
The best solution to this situation is some form of diplomacy, ie: leave later, or install a quieter exhaust. Chances are if your neighbors see you making an effort to "quiet down" they'll be more inclined to leave you alone. That said- It's really difficult to own a modified car and be able to appease the thoughts and opinions of everyone around you. What I mean is, is that it's difficult to have a car that doesn't sound / look like a Prius without being labled / profiled as a street racer. I sympathize with the situation, good luck- |

I expect that your neighbors really don't care what you have an issue with. They just want you to stop waking them up and have zero interest in anything you have to say about why your muffler is really OK. Plus they probably don't trust you to act in any reasonable manner. I may be wrong, but that's the way I'd think if you were my neighbor. |

If it's legal I wouldn't do a damn thing. Except having a cop sign off on it, and possibly making photocopies of that and posting it on peoples doors. Maybe with a couple solutions for them like wearing ear plugs, sound proofing their house, chipping in for a new exhaust, etc . Solutions where they have to pay instead of you "fixing" your legal exhaust because I personally have a hard time paying that much for something that really isn't necessary. In my opinion if they don't have the respect to come to you and personally talk about it before making noise complaints then they aren't exactly great neighbors. They sound like my boyfriends neighbors who complain regularly because I "can't park on the street in front of their house". Because they have 5 cars and don't use their garage .
Calling the cops on someone before politely trying to find a solution is not neighborly behavior. I live in a nicer suburb, new houses with big backyards and front yards. If anyone has an issue with something they usually talk about it first. It's always better to be on friendly terms with your neighbors. I think that's a better solution than immediately calling the cops because when you call the cops you are automatically putting that person on the defense. And let's be real here, you live in a suburb, not a multi-million dollar neighborhood. People will hear noise. If it was a harley or an older truck I doubt people would complain. Also, if your exhaust is as quiet as you say it is and you take off as slowly as you do, I find it hard to believe it's actually waking people up. Do they complain when the garbage trucks come by at 7am as well? |

No, it is better to be on friendly terms, but when it comes to that amount of money for something that is legal I don't believe you should do anything. His neighbors chose to deal with it in that way right off the bat. At this point with that letter telling him he HAS to comply there is no going back to peachy terms. Especially when the cop already told him it was ok.
I didn't say he need's to be on good terms. It's just better, but sometimes it can't be that way. |

This is why I live out in the woods with a mile long driveway. Can't stand close proximity neighbors.

easy solution:
1.) Win the lottery. 2.) Hire an awesome lawyer. 3.) Be a dick to whoever you'd like. It's the 'merican way! Btw, I bet your neighbor is some bitchy stay-at-home wife who needs her "beauty sleep" before getting up at 10am for her soaps. If they don't explain themselves, you have no obligations to them. |

yet another thought, you don't stand out there revving right? how do they not fall asleep right after?
a frickin jet can fly by my window, wake me up for all of 20 seconds, and i'd fall right back asleep. it's a nicety that hard working, sleep deprived people have. |

The problem is that you're leaving so early in the morning. The neighbor is most likely a light sleeper and you are waking them up. They probably are assuming the exhaust is illegal even though it's not. So you really only have two options. Keep it as it is and continue to annoy neighbors, or put on a quieter exhaust.

Roll the window down and give em the bird. Neighbors can be annoying and this is just one of those cases! Definitely dont waste your money on making it quieter unless you are told to do so by the police officially.
