As a community of WRX/STI owners who I'm assuming appreciate the boxer rumble its kind of surprising how many of you are siding with the neighbor on this one. I guess some of you don't have crazy neighbors who like to complain over every little thing and don't even have the decency to talk to you before calling the police?

Sorry, but I'm not going to bend over backwards to appease a bunch of random anonymous douche bag neighbors who can't even work with me on a solution. Maybe leaving 15 minutes later is a solution, maybe a quieter exhaust would work better, maybe they could do a trial of keeping the revs lower.

There's so many possibilities when you have a discussion - going straight to the police is just stupid and sending anonymous letters without even a phone number is pure harassment.

With all the evidence in this thread, it's obvious the WRX owner in this case is actually in the right here to me, and I recommend not living your life in a box for fear of your cowardly dumb ass neighbors who don't even know the law.

My advice is get them on camera and next time they step on your property dropping off letters, you can have a face to face with them and maybe teach them a little something about basic human interaction.

If they do turn out to be crazy at least you have enough to get a restraining order so you can keep your property protected.

Really amazed how many of you think it's way too much to ask to have a 5 minute conversation with your damned neighbor.

Really people? Really? CaseDoc should tell his neighbors to quit being such passive-aggressive pussies and deal with it. I get woken up by a goddamn garbage truck every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday at 6am right outside my window for 20-30 minutes at a time and they're complaining about THAT? Unbelievable. At least have the balls to whine to the OP in person. How can any of you defend these people??

there IS a difference

wakie-wakie and see the difference

the car does NOT need to be loud....other than to stroke the kiddie of the driver

Yeah, the difference is I would gladly trade the sound of a garbage truck emptying 6 dumpsters right outside my window for the loud exhaust of one car. OP's neighbors are whiny passive-aggressives no matter how you spin it.

But not everyone would prefer that and not everyone is in that position.
The fact that not everyone is in your position and has a differing opinion does not make everyone else a bunch of whiny little bitches.

No, but writing anonymous, threatening letters sure does.

Put your stock exhaust back on. You can live without the extra 3.9hp that your loud exhaust gives you. A cop coming by and saying it's legal doesn't mean it's not waking anyone up.

Yah, your neighbor is a wimp for not coming over. Maybe he works odd hours and is never around, working 2 jobs and only is home when he's sleeping.

Why do you need that extra 3.9hp anyways? Do you work as a racecar driver? Racewars?

If the neighbor comes over and faces you in a civil manner, presents his case, and asks you to be quieter is it going to make a difference to you? Are you going to go out and buy a new exhaust?

I take it your mid 40s+ and are always saying things like "these damn kids"?

Or a better idea is that the guy complaining gets a $35 sound machine instead of OP purchasing a $700 exhaust to satisfy a neighbor. He said the car came with the exhaust in question. Will YOU be purchasing this for him?

If a cop says he is legal why should he do anything?? He owes said neighbor nothing. He/She complained to the cops already... They came and inspected.... Said he was good to go. Case closed. Said neighbor can suck on a fat one if he doesn't like it. OP isn't slamming on it in the neighborhood and the OP isn't running with an overly loud exhaust to begin with.

I could see a valid complaint if OP was being a nuisance. But he says he isn't.... So what is there left to do?

If the neighbor really wanted to talk he would leave a name and time they could meet to talk if he has that big of an issue. Or would knock on his door like a normal neighbor.

Everyone needs to chill out. His exhaust isn't known to be a stupid loud exhaust. He's not bouncing off the limiter with a nur spec.

If it were me, if the neighbor had come to me and asked, i would look into a slip in silencer or something. But if they call the cops and wrote a threatening letter when that didn't work, I wouldn't do a damn thing.

Respect begets respect.

All you need is a $10 slip in exhaust silencer that fits the tail pipe. It takes 2 seconds to remove if you want to do that. You also need to ensure that the tailpipe is NOT facing any houses when you start your car....back it in or change the direction of parking so the trumpet faces no house.

Don't get wrapped up on the note like its a damn death threat. Some people leave anonymous notes as they don't like confrontation (read women). Its not passive/aggressive....its called life and different people deal with things differently.

I had a neighbor that had a Mustang with cherry bombs or something. He would get in his car at 5am and rev and rev and rev and rev and rev and rev that thing until it idled properly. He was clueless as to why my other neighbor with triplets was pissed. We talked to him....We told him how to mitigate the noise....he shook his head and made the proper clucking noises and did squat. He eventually moved which resolved it.

Don't be an asshat, don't get all "I'm within my rights", be a good neighbor and resolve this with an exhaust silencer and ensure you park with the tailpipe facing in the safest direction possible.

You need to deal with whoever is complaining more so than changing your car, especially if it is legal.

I had to open the gym i worked at for a month which meant leaving at 430am in a 6.0 GTO with headers an x pipe and straight pipe exhaust. Never got a complaint. It seems like maybe someone is just "out to get you".

I deal with a similar issue where I live. There are usually 3 Subarus at my house at any given time. My WRX, my brother's STI, and my friend's WRX. They are all modified, but not overly loud, at least not in the manner we drive in the neighborhood.

Funny thing is, the neighbor who calls the cops is a family friend. My car is literally as quiet as stock when I drive in the neighborhood. I always wave at the guy, and he just gives me a devil stare in return.

I don't really know what to do. Part of my wants to be obnoxious with a strait pipe...the other (mature, responsible) part of me wants to just keep doing what I'm doing, which is being quiet and friendly.

Maybe I'll go ask him what is up his ass next time he gives me a dirty look.

Oh and the icing on the cake is: There are several dirt bikes, quads, scooters, etc that buzz around almost constantly. I don't really have a problem with them because we are out in the country, but damn they are way louder than my WRX that has 2 resonators and a muffler.

I live right next to a hospital, should i go over and leave a message for them to quiet their helicopter and maybe not fly 6ft above my house but fly over my neighbors? This is ridiculous. If a cop says its fine then i wouldnt worry about it any more. If anything have a giant bbq and dont invite any of them.

It's allowed for safety. On a motorcycle in California at least there is unspoken rule about bikes being allowed loud exhaust.
If not seen they will be heard.

Don't know what the law is in Ohio, but here in Wisconsin if your exhaust is louder than it came from the factory, it's technically illegal. Do police officers know how loud your car came from the factory? Probably not. You have to do something to piss someone off or have something pretty loud to draw attention to you... If an officer said you were OK, fine, so be it. In the interest of being a decent neighbor, get a slip-in silencer, or trade with a local member to something a little quieter. Not a big deal, I wouldn't get too bent out of shape over it.

The retards around here that piss me off are the rednecks with their straight pipes on their crapbox trucks that feel the need to rev their engines at all hours of the day, douche canoe 50 somethings on their Harleys that think it's cool to be heard two miles away, and kidiots with their rusted out rice buckets that have giant fart cannons on them. I don't complain out of principle, I have a 3" catless exhaust, mind you I only have a SPT catback, so it's not terribly loud, but it's like the pot calling the kettle black.

In my honest opinion, I'd get another cheap and quiet daily driver if having a louder exhaust on your car is that important to you.

I'm only saying this because of the odd hours you work. 99.5% of people are still sleeping at 4:30AM so really, you should not be waking everyone else up just so you can enjoy your modded car. If you were leaving at say 6:30, I'd say to hell with anyone that has a problem with your exhaust...

I have listened to all of them give me their loud pipe ticket sob stories. I have been pulled over and been talked to but never been ticketed on my own bikes and customers, but by all rights should have been.

In my younger days I had a go around with a neighbor a block down the road I had to go by to get into my area of the neighborhood. He worked nights. I could come home, park the bike, go inside grab a drink and meet an officer at the front door like clockwork. Every damn time I went by his house. The police didn't think the exhaust was excessively loud, but I will admit it was loud and had a lot of bass to it even at low loads. Went on like that for an entire summer until he called the police make a report at which time an officer showed up at his place to hand him a citation for harassment. It seems that making several illegitimate police reports(since the police didn't have an issue with the loud pipes) will get you a ticket.

A few years after that, one of the neighbors had a new born that would wake up when I came home at night. He asked me to keep it down. So I decided to come into my neighborhood via another route to avoid his house. For two years I took the long way home to keep the peace between us.

If you want what some may consider a loud exhaust, be prepared to pay a ticket now and then. You got to pay to play.
Interesting perspective. It isn't very often that you get a detailed explanation from somebody who works or rides bikes. I'll juxtapose your excellent response with this:

Have you heard, or seen semi trucks who gut their mufflers and roar down streets louder than a Harley and the OPs Subaru combined? Do you really think truckers do this for safety?

They do it for the same reason the OP does, for the sound. Personally, there is a place for a loud exhaust, but it isn't on the street, regardless of what you drive.
