Valve spring recall on Impreza
Just got a recall letter on my 2012 Impreza for valve spring replacement.
What's the risk of them screwing something up? Should I wait a few month for the the tech's to get good a doing this repair before bring it in? Or am I better not doing any fix and take a chance that the the spring won't go bad?

There is discussion about this in the 2012 Impreza thread.
If they mess something up while in there then they “should” be responsible for it. I would hope a Subaru dealer would have sufficient knowledge to do this properly. I will probably get it down the line somewhere |

Risk vs reward I guess. When I had my new shortblock installed it came with a 1 yr 12k mike warranty. Not sure if that will apply to this or not

I did schedule service for mine, it is over 100k miles anyways and I have heard some abnormal noise at times, not sure if it is related to this. Dealer was booked 3 weeks out for this service, so hopefully by then they should be practiced in the procedure.

I was told about it when I brought my 13 Crosstrek in for the 2nd oil consumption test. They told me coming in and asked if I wanted it done while I wait. I just laughed. Half an hour later, they tell me I'm getting a new short block. So I'll be getting all kinds of new stuff to go along with my already replaced CVT.

I went yesterday to my dealer to make an apt and he said give us like 2 weeks, we have to get the parts in stock and the techs have to go to school to learn how to do the job.

Yeah, best to wait for them to do the repair. Don’t want to be an early adopter for this repair.
Slightly disappointing that the cam carrier doesn’t have to be removed for this fix, maybe my leak is from somewhere else. We shall see |

Short block replacement is for the oil consumption issue.

Here's my question regarding this issue.
I have a 212 Imprezza that I understand is one of the years that has experienced head gasket failure (correct me if I'm wrong). Will the valve spring repair include removing the head? I'm thinking if it does they would have to replace the head gasket as part of this repair. 2 birds is the thought. If head removal is not needed, I wonder how likely a dealer would be to give me a "deal" and fix the gasket preemptively, since they are already in there. Any thoughts? Charlie |

No head gasket issues. At least no more than other brands.
I was wondering the same thing, if they will give you a deal on labor for doing plugs or something since everything is already opened up and easily accessible. I need plugs soon. |

Doubtful, they will just charge book value. They almost lose money doing warranty work |

So 2012 Imprezza doesn't have head gasket issues? That's good to hear. Anyone care to explain things I should be looking out for in this model year then?

Oil burning due to ****ty rings, luckily no one wants the FB so low mileage motors are dirt cheap. Mine was 600.00 complete w/ 25k on it..... Valve springs breaking (apparently) |

Only other thing than what flyboy mentioned is brakes sticking has been a relatively common issue. Not a major one though. Usually it’s the pad edges rusting make them get pinched in the clips.
A little filing or grinding does the trick. |

I have minor oil consumption issue. With 7500 miles between oil changes, I usually need to add about 0.5 quart oil after 5000 miles. I'm experimenting with 5w30 conventional oil right now. I'm hoping the thicker oil will 'leak' less and less oil consumption.
I haven't complained to Subaru about oil consumption and the car is out of warranty now, so I guess they won't be doing a short block replacement for me then. |

That is nowhere near excessive consumption.
I lost a quart in 3000 miles, since switch to 0-40 I lose a quart in about 7000. Don’t go with conventional do full synthetic just go for a heavier weight like 0-40 You only need to worry if it’s like 1 quart loss per 1000miles. |

It's mainly needed for best MPG, but the difference is not even noticeable. I have had at least 10 tanks of fill ups with the 5w30 and see no difference in MPG. On a separate topic, I did see 10% MPG drop when I switched tires. |

There really is no benefit to running conventional oil.
Synthetic is slightly more expensive but last twice as long and doesn’t gum up as bad as conventional. Also it is recommended by Subaru to run in your car. I put synthetic in everything saves money in oil and keeps engines cleaner. |
