Long time reader, first time poster....
Okay, I havent really been reading THAT long, but long enough to have some questions.
First of all I recently bought an '02 wrx (Blaze Yellow) that has a few mods to it, and want to get your expert opinions on it. Here's what it has: 1. VF34 turbo, don't know about the injectors(they look like the stock light blue ones, but I don't know if they've been modified or not), GReddy FMIC, HKS blow off valve (I thought the SSQBV was supposed to be quiet?), full 3" cat-less exhaust, some kind of unknown engine management (drift office, in Auburn, WA, uses cobb and openECU, and they couldnt link up to the ECU), Defi boost/egt gauges with link display and controller. 2. JIC magic coilovers with pillowball and camber plate(I cant tell what model they are), front strut bar, some black 18x7.5 rims with 3 different brands of tires(before you get excited, they are the same size, but I am getting new ones as soon as I can) I just bought an '03 ecu for $100, and plan on taking it to drift office (opinions?), after I get an acessport, for a tune just to make sure it does have a good tune. They use a dynojet. I live in Auburn, WA, which is right between Tacoma and Seattle, if you didn't already know. I plan on getting the tune within the next couple months. So my questions are, what do you think of the set up, and what should I expect to see numbers wise, when I get it tuned? Thanks for all your help/opinions... Chase

If you don't know what kind of injectors or tune you have, I suggest getting 565cc injectors and a tune ASAP. For all you know, if you drive it the way it is for another mile, it could blow.
You don't need a JDM ecu. |

It has SOME kind of tune, but they couldn't tell what, and I didn't have time to have it on the dyno to see how good of one it is.
The ECU I bought is to replaice the one I have now, which as far as the guys at Drift Office could tell, is locked out. Like I said, I don't know the PO, so there's no way to tell what he used to tune it with. As far as the injectors go, it doesn't seem like its running lean, and there's no noticeable knock, so I'm not too worried about them until I see the results of the tune... |

You might want to do a search in Proven Power Bragging. This setup I'm sure is common. You'll be able to see a range of what people have accomplished on similar setups.

Sounds like a pretty nice ride to me. My guess is that the injectors that you have in there have been modded if they are the light blue stockers, otherwise your tune would have to be very conservative not to max out the injectors.
I'm running a some what similar set up, VF39, stock exhaust manifold with Perrin catless UP, DP and greddy evo2 cat back. However I am running an STI top mount and stock injectors from an MY06 wrx. With these mods, I made 285/286 on PRE's dyno dynamics dyno. I would expect similar numbers out of yours. I opted to go protune since I already had a version one accessport, but if I haddn't, I would have just opted for an open source. I really don't see the need for the AP if I'm only running one map. Maybe if I had a race fuel map that I wanted to swap back and forth between, then maybe it would be worth it. My reccomendation is forget the AP if you don't plan on running multiple maps. The car sounds pretty nice, you should throw up some pics if you get the chance. |

I've been thinking more about it, and I probably will just go with opensource, because I don't think I have enough money for both the AP and a tune to go with it...

Car looks good.. You got some nice to mods to start out with.
Your car should make about 300whp after you get it protuned. Here is a pic of mine. Last edited by Valenti; 02-16-2009 at 03:52 AM. |
