Default 02 5MT into a 04 FXT?

I've been able to track down a complete 5 speed swap from an 02 wrx wagon minus the axles. Including all ecu, abs, blah blah for $800. My question is should I take a high milage (200+) tranny and driveline from an 02 and put it in my 04 fozzy? Is it worth $800? Still need axles, clutch, nuts and bolts. Open thoughts? Cheers.

You could do it. It would last about 6 maybe 7 feet before it exploded though. I'd tell you why, but I want you to do your work by reading the sticky threads and paying particular attention to final drive ratios amongst Subarus.

And worth....I have $200 tweezers in my garage. Are they worth $200? They are solid titanium and can pick up items in the µ range. Are they worth $200? Do you see how you cannot ask worth?

I am trying hard to read before I ask. From what I understand the 5 speed in the xt and the wrx are the same until the final drive, whereas the XT is a 4.44 and the wrx is 3.9. I also comprehend that this is a major difference, but I don't understand where you would automatically say that it would end in disaster? I treat my forester like a wrx. I don't tow and never plan on it, and rarely find myself with a heavy load on board. I know my 4eat now has a final drive of 4.11 but the trans gears are so different that that is an irrelevant fact. I don't understand that if I switched the trans and matching diff why it would be a failure before talking about the trans age and condition etc. Please enlighten me, I am here to learn. Thank you.

Youd be trying to spin the wheels on one end of the car at a different speed than the other end while going through the same gearbox. You need the rear diff too. End of story.

Let me quote myself...

"I don't understand that if I switched the trans and matching diff why.."

When I said a complete swap, I meant a COMPLETE swap.

Oh, I guess I missed that then.
The only thing I can tell you then is that the 02 trans had smaller diameter gears and was more prone to failure. Maybe not "glass" but definitely not the best. If you have matching gear ratios you will be fine and not tear the trans out.
