Default SSC "Ultimate Aero TT" Attempts to Break Production Car Speed Record Next Week

SSC "Ultimate Aero TT" Attempts to Break Production Car Speed Record Next Week

Press Release:
Quote:
SSC, manufacturer of exclusive super cars, announced today that testing to set the world production speed record will commence on March 21st, 2007. In conjunction with MKM Racing, SSC has closed down a 12-mile stretch of Highway 93 in Elko County, Nevada to attempt to break the 253 mph record currently held by the Bugatti Veyron. MKM Racing has been hired to oversee safety and provide laser traps to verify speeds to an accuracy of .01 mph.

Led by founder/lead designer Jerod Shelby, the SSC design team has spent the past 7 years creating the ultimate super car. Boasting 1183 bhp and 1094 ft-lbs of torque from a proprietary twin-turbo V8 power plant, the Ultimate Aero TT produces more emissions-legal horsepower than any other production automobile in the world. Wind tunnel testing at NASA's Langley, Virginia facility revealed a coefficient of drag of just .357 and showed the 2,750 lb Ultimate Aero TT capable of speeds up to 273 mph.

The Ultimate Aero TT remains remarkably drivable, retaining excellent idle characteristics despite its intention to run for long periods of time at redline. In addition, the Ultimate Aero TT has all the amenities of a luxury sedan. the supple leather/suede interior is highlighted by custom Recaro seats, a 10 speaker premium system, DVD/navigation/backup camera, and a cab-controlled lift that raises the front an extra 4 inches to navigate road hazards.

Updates on the "Quest for the Record" are available at http://www.sscautos.com.

IMO the blue/white one looks like one of those ricers who could't afford to paint their cheap fiberglass bomber body kit for their Honduh.

Khudos for their efforts. Good luck with the testing.

So is this a one-off meant to break the record, or do they intend this as a serious Veyron/Koenigwhatever/Zonda/McLaren challenger? I don't really understand the point.

I spoke with their head PR guy at SEMA this year. At first, I thought this was a kitted out Diablo, which inintially, piqued my interest. However, upon closer examintion, this really is a neat car. Its hasnt been produced with the huge budget of Bugatti, and thatis what makes it cool. Its a 6sp too.... all those dsg and f1 lovers can eat it!

I would love to see this thing win the production speed record.
Root for the underdog, go SSC!

I like the look of the black and blue one, but agree with the unpainted body kit comparison of the white and blue one.

Yeah, I think the whole car looks something like a Ford Focus mated with a Lambo. Even has the oval shaped grill insignia. Though admittedly, that might be due to the color choice. Sounds like a badass car otherwise. I'd still prefer a CCX over this or the Veyron.

UPDATE:

http://www.autocar.co.uk/News/NewsAr...aspx?AR=224986

Quote:
US supercar misses Veyron's record

The Bugatti Veyron's status as the world's fastest production car is safe – for now. American sports car maker Shelby Supercars' attempt to send a twin-turbocharged version of its Ultimate Aero beyond 250mph is reported to have ended yesterday with a maximum recorded speed of 230mph, 23mph short of the Veyron's 253mph record.

SSC's attempt at the production car top speed record has been widely publicised, but few predicted that bad weather would get in the way. March 21 was due to be the day it closed a 12-mile stretch of Elko County's Highway 93 for the run, but snow forced them to regroup yesterday (March 22), when only test runs of two miles were deemed safe.

Veteran road racer Rick Doria was the man picked to drive the 1183bhp SSC. On his first test run, he reported wheelspin when shifting into 6th gear at 190mph, and went on to 221mph. On his second attempt, the Ultimate Aero hit a maximum 230mph within the two-mile test stretch, and was only using 50 per cent throttle in top gear at that speed. He's reported to have said that the car would comfortably break the Veyron's 253mph top speed given a longer run.

The word is that Shelby Supercars is going to make another attempt at the record within weeks;

I've done the MKM race before. It's fun. I didn't know they had one in March though. That's way too early. I've done the Pony Express race of theirs. The SSC car has done races like this before and failed miserably every time. (before they were at the Silver State Classic Challenge http://www.sscc.us ) Doesn't surprise me that they didn't make it again.

Nothing quite like the experience of legal high-speed racing on public highways.

The lights in person look like eBay APC special Focus projectors Pretty sure that's all they are. They even have the flat spots in the corners like Focus headlights.

Thinking about it, it doesn't surprise me they switched venues to try to break the speed record. As I mentioned earlier, they were trying at the Silver State Classic Challenge but couldn't even beat Option Magazine's Stream Z speed wise. They kept having problems with the computers, according to them. The Silver State Classic Challenge is held in Ely, NV and goes down Hwy 318. You start at nearly a mile high and go down in elevation as you go south towards Las Vegas. It's VERY hard to get cars to cooperate in the thin air at those altitudes. I had alot of problems with both my WRX and my STi trying to get decent power at those elevations. N/A cars just win out. The Stream Z did better 'cause they've been up there multiple times and have finally been learning to tune for the elevation - the SSC crew were newbies.

The MKM events in Elko are at much lower elevations compared to the SSCC events in Ely. ALOT easier to tune for.

So, all hype and nothing. Not only did they miss the Veryron speed by 23 MPH they also missed their stated speed by 43 MPH. Not that it's easy to get a car to go 200+ MPH.

What tires did they use? Or do they plan on using at 250+ MPH? The Veryon is limited at that speed because of the tires I thought?
