Spun bearing on stock motor. build ideas.
so i spun a bearing (most likely, regardless it is borked) the other night and well i now need to decide on what to do next. which is both and .
so i need some feedback/suggestions. anything would be extremely helpful. and yes I'm on the stock 5 speed. car has about 70k miles. 1. Rebuild my motor back to stock specs, but that newer crank with more oil journals, and maybe different bearings/clearances? 2. Hybrid build - that newer stock crank, maybe upgraded rods and pistons? 3. new short block and swap over what i can to it 4. used complete 2.0 5. full STi swap also thinking about possibly running E85 I'm on a budget of about 2-4k. i already have a shop that can assemble/re build the motor for me for about 400 so im good on that.

Did you figure out what caused the spun bearing? Low oil level, cracked pickup, dirty oil, or some other cause?

and no, i will be able to tell you what happened in a few weeks when i get the motor out and apart. i think it had something to do with hard cornering+high revs in the cold ass winter lol. |

If you spun a bearing , there is a good chance your heads/cams are trashed.
It takes surprisingly little bearing material to score the cams & Journals \ I would tear it down , then see exactly what u need . |

Even then, they aren't exactly trashed, just need a deck and align hone on the journals, and new/polished cams.

I guess it all depends on how much driving was done after , Another member( Ronzogonzo) spun a bearing on a 255 & drove only 11 miles babying it , heads, crank & cams destroyed

Yeah, my heads/cams are scarred up after someone spinning a rod bearing or two.

well i guess we need to tear it apart to see. but we drove about 1-5ish miles i would say i think, just to get it home.

^^ on what turbo?
how do those cams preform/sound? i was considering cams. but they arent useful at my power goals, and am in it more for the sound (i know). i like the nice lopey idle and whatnot. |

FP green for now... in a couple months it will be swapped for an HTA 35r setup... what are your power goals? most people look to jus stage 2 and
call it a day... others(like me) get there and realize that this car has way more potential!! i don't think the sound is that much different from whatever one is telling me... car should be finished soon, i will let you know how she sounds...lol i am in it for the sound also... but what changes the note alot is if you switch to an equal length header... makes our cars sound like EVO's...lol |

If you decide to go with #5, I've got a used STI short block with 67,800 mi. that I'm about to put up for sale. Heads were damaged due to cracked oil pickup tube, but car seized up before there was any damage to the lower end. ( See this thread for details: http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/show....php?t=1864345 ) Dealer said I just needed new top end, but I opted for a whole new motor. Mechanic said the heads could be fixed with an over sized cam (meaning the journals are over sized) and a proper honing of the journal bearing surface on the heads. Anyway, thought I'd throw that out there. PM me if interested.
