Nikon D3200 or D5100?
So I saw that Costco has good deals on both of these right now and they are both priced within a few bucks of each other. I'm just looking for an entry level DSLR. I'm having a hard time figuring out which one would be better. The 5100 comes with 55mm and 300mm lenses and has the flip out LCD, but is 16megapixels and has a 4GB SD card with it. The D3200 is 24megapixels and comes with a 16gb SD card, but the card is a standard and not the 30mb/sec one. The D3200 comes with 55mm and only 200mm lenses. Other than those differences, they seem to be almost the same. Thoughts?

Personally I'd pick the D5100.
-Better sensor (D7000) -More features -16mp takes up gobs up memory and creates massive images, I can't imagine what 24gb would do in RAW. If I could I would make my D7000 10.2mp. -The flip out screen flips inward to protect the screen when traveling. The D3200 is good too, you can't go wrong with either. I had a D3000 though and it really treats you like a noob which gets old after a month or so. Alot of avid amateurs use the D5100 as a backup and alot of pros use it as their 3rd camera. |

Haha my Sony A850 and A900 kill memory cards in RAW. If I shoot RAW I only use 32gb cards. |

Congrats.
Nikon make great cameras for sure. I shoot with a Canon but its not because their bodies are better. as for the sensors, Im pretty sure the 24 MP sensor in the new Nikons is SONY's sensor. It is very good. however, the 5100 will probably be a better overall camera for you. Enjoy it. |

Whatever you buy, make sure to upgrade kit lens they come with. You can have the best camera and shoot with a sub par lens and have stuff look like ****. Don't get me wrong, kit lenses are decent but not that great.
Get a good prime (they are cheaper than a really good zoom). I went with canon and bought the 50mm f1.2. Shooting through good glass makes all the difference. Hope this helps. |

I have the Nikon D5000. It is about 3 years old and has been very reliable.

I'll be selling my D7000 here in the next week or so...I just don't use it enough. I've got lots of extras with it as well. Let me know if you're interested and I'll throw a list together of everything I've got.

Let me know what you've got as far as extras. Would be interested in grip+fast 16 or 32 gb memory cards.

THIS. I have this exact lens and could not be HAPPIER with it. It's an extremely versatile lens. Quick sample pic I snapped last x-mas: Well now....I've got the grip (not the actual Nikon grip, but works just as great IMO, for half the price. Only funky thing is the buttons work opposite, which is common for non-Nikon grips) I don't have a spare battery though. And I've also got a 45mb/s 16gb memory card. |

See that you already made you purchase so congrats! All these guys are right on. The megapixels won't really matter unless your doing large prints. The 5100 will easily allow you to print 20"x30" with stunning quality. My first DLSR the D40 was only 6mp and still had great images, a good sized sensor is the biggest factor a lot of the times from point and shoot to DSLR, not so much MP.
The Flying Dutchman makes a good point, get some good glass. The lower the f/ stop the better. 1.2 is a little crazy awesome something to be jealous about, but I would suggest checking out a 35mm f1.8 or 50mm 1.8. Relatively cheap prime lens that are really fast and give great Depth of Field. When you do get lenses, jyst make sure they are AF-S, AF lenses will not auto focus on the 5100. If you have any questions feel free to message me. Love photography |

^^ Yes I heard the same thing that Sony was giving out their full frame 24mp sensors to other brands.
