Default Hello, welcome to my Interior Color Change

Hi everyone. Been seeing a few introductory threads lately so thought I'd throw one out there. My name is Jon and I just picked up an 07 STI. Been lurking around here for quite a while. Its pretty bad when your bitten by the mod bug before you even have the car

Anyways, since all the basic bolt-ons have been done already, I figured I'd leave the performance mods alone for awhile and go for some aesthetics. Never thought I'd be tearing a car apart that I hadn't even owned for a week yet So without further ado and before I get a TTIWWOP here are a couple of pics of the finished product.

Plasti-Dip on moving parts FTL. If you look close in the next pic you'll see what I mean.

It was your standard plasti-dip and duplicolor vinyl and fabric dye treatment. It actually looks kinda crappy in the pics but I assure you it looks much better in person. The headliner is MUCH darker than in the pics. It really is black in person, not grey like it looks.

If your thinking about doing this and you have any kind of perfectionist streak about you, do yourself a favor and just do the headliner, the pillars, and the light assemblies. IMHO they turned out great. I got a little carried away and tried to do all the small bits and pieces like the OS handles and all the plastic bits on the sun visors. Only piece I pulled the plasti-dip off of that I had painted was the OS handles themselves (FYI, its EASY to get the stuff off if you don't like it. At least on the handles it was.) Everything else I had painted I just left for now. I may or may not undo some of it in the future, depends on how much it grows on me. I kind of like it the way it is atm. My initial plan called for doing the cloth on the sun visors and the sliding assemblies behind the seatbelts also but I'm not sure if I'm gonna do that or not.

Anyways, if anyone had been contemplating doing this I just wanted to let you know it is pretty easy to do. I've never tore apart an interior before and I failed Rattlecan 101 and it still turned out pretty good. Only part of this that I can't undo is the headliner. So if you have been thinking about doing this, go for it. It is a cheap mod and only takes some time.

Questions, comments, and flames are all appreciated

Cute? Awesome, that was just the look i was going for. Got any pics of yours Marlon? Yeah, this is T's old car. Was only the third/fourth one I tried to buy. Being slope trash makes it hard to act fast sometimes.

Congrats! That is a nice car as I'm sure you know.
Did you get the airbag stickers off of the visors? I've seen other people remove them when they do the spray dye and plasti dip.

NO!! Any advice on how to get them off? I would love to make them disappear. I have seen where people have dyed over them but haven't seen any where they actually removed them. Might just not have looked hard enough though.

LOL! ummm I dont think I have any pictars atm of mine, but yours looks better to say the least. and awdbst did it previously...wish he would have done the visors aswell but I guess I could always do it.

And not to say that awdbst didnt do a good job. Its just fading from all the folks thinking its suede...and wanting to touch, scratch..etc.

Every thread I have seen on them, people ask and either the OP doesn't respond, or people rip them off and use mineral spirits to rub the rest off. I googled it and this looks like it might work without ruining the visors:

1) Use an Xacto knife to carefully start lifting a corner of the sticker from the visor. You just need enough of a corner for grip so you can start peeling it back later. You need to be really careful not to dig into the actual visor with the knife. You want to get between the visor and sticker with the knife.

2) Take a damp cloth and place over an iron (I keep the iron around the medium setting). Carefully move the iron over the visor.

3) Start peeling back the sticker from the corner you previously lifted. Reapply the iron periodically to keep the adhesive warm (makes it easier to peel back).

Hmmm i might try that. Those damn stickers have bugged me and I haven't quite know what to do with the visors.

I did the headliner and all the column pieces except in the very back with fake suede fabric. All the plastic pieces are flat black, except the buttons, which are WRB, and then just completely deleted the O.S. handles. I should post some pics for ya. Welcome to the board though.
