Default Top Ten Worst Selling Cars of 2010

Quote:
Between Yahoo and Forbes, they’ve come up with the worst selling cars of 2010. Did you purchase one of these? If so, let us know your thoughts as a consumer.
Smart ForTwo
Sales decline: -61%
The quirky two-seater was popular in 2008, when gas was $4 a gallon, but now that fuel prices have moderated, sales have collapsed. Penske Automotive Group, which distributes the vehicle in the U.S., is now testing Smart in Car2Go, a car-sharing concept, and plans to market an electric version soon.
Subaru Tribeca
Sales decline: -61%
Subaru’s been on a tear lately, but the ungainly Tribeca crossover SUV hasn’t really been part of the success story. It’s an also-ran in the crowded crossover market. Where Subaru stands out is with its four-wheel-drive cars and wagons.
Mazda RX-8
Sales decline: -50%
Even $30,000 sports cars aren’t selling when people are worried about their jobs. {At least not if it’s the RX-8, the Mustang is still selling like mad. – Spectre)
Suzuki Grand Vitara
Sales decline: -42%
This crossover SUV has grown long in the tooth, and can’t compete in what is one of the hottest segments.
Suzuki SX4
Sales decline: -47%
Refreshed a year and a half ago, the SX4 just gets lost amid the competition and lack of advertising support.
Suzuki Equator
Sales decline: -39%
The entire Suzuki lineup is suffering, including this mid-sized pickup manufactured by Nissan in Tennessee. Now the carmaker is marketing it as a way to transport Suzuki motor bikes.
Toyota Yaris
Sales decline: -38%
Small cars aren’t selling as well now that gas prices have moderated. Toyota’s rash of quality recalls hasn’t helped.
Mazda Tribute
Sales decline: -36%
A poor stepchild in the Mazda lineup, it can’t compete with the Ford Escape, on which it’s based.
Scion xD
Sales decline: – 31%
More stylish than its predecessor, this youthful Scion still faces the challenge of its Toyota Yaris cousin: Really small cars aren’t much in demand.
Porsche Cayman
Sales decline: – 31%
Nobody really needs a $50,000 sports car. Porsche hopes the addition of its most powerful mid-engine in the newly introduced Cayman R will create some buzz.

If I needed a smallish truck, I'd buy the Equator. Nissan goodness with Suzuki's longer warranty = win

As much as I adore the RX-8, I wouldn't buy one. My NB Miata is a better sports car and there's a lot less to go wrong with it.

Wouldn't buy a Cayman over the Boxster, either. If you're buying a limited-use sports car, it might as well have the droptop.

The SX4 is a great little car -- lots of fun to chuck around and the build quality is excellent for the $$$. Too bad Suzuki has no advertising budget.

Maybe Porsche will finally price the coupe for less than the friggin convertible like every other coupe/convertible pair in history. Thieves. Too bad because of course they recognize it is better as a coupe.

The article is poorly worded too. It is not their most powerful engine in the R, although if they're trying to say it will have the most powerful engine ever in a Cayman they could, but at +10 hp, it's a joke. If it were their most powerful NA engine that would be the ~420 hp mill from the 911 GT3. That would be sweet!

Yeah, the Cayman pricing is really one of the most obvious rip offs in the industry. Whatever the market will bear at its finest. Except now the novelty has worn of, and it's not selling. Good, I hope that makes them price it below the Boxster as they damn well should.

I've never even heard of the Equator.

The Smart never made sense to me. It costs as much as a bigger economy car like a Fit and doesn't get any better mileage. What's the point?

I think Government Motors and Chrysler/Fiat are going to get a shock when they find out that:
--most people don't want to buy really small cars
--people that do want small cars prefer asian imports

Well, the point might be that it carries less people than the Fit which is very practical, since no one would want to ride in it.

I'd be more interested in seeing such a list weighted by unsold inventory. Here we go: http://www.newcars.com/news/days-on-lot

It makes sense in european cities that are extremely congested and have little to no room for parking. That's where it shines. Otherwise it makes no sense anywhere else.

The Equator is a rebadged Nissan (Pathfinder?) one of the other mods has one for a tow rig and IIRC he likes it.

The Smart makes sense if you live in a large city with limited parking (Seattle, NYC, Chicago etc....) The mileage would have been great if Penske had 2 brain cells to rub together, instead they brought over the gasser instead of the oil burner.

For the last part, Chrysler / Fiat are in a great position as long as they market the 500 properly (AKA Mini) Market it as an upscale / sporty alternative to the Asian imports and price it close enough to make sense (but still at a slight premium with standard equipment)

I don't know that the Smart would sell any better with a diesel. It would tack on quite a bit more money up front and going from 41 highway to 51 highway doesn't save you much money.

I seem to recall the diesel returning 70 odd mpg (US gallons)

Quote:
European Union (EU) testing rates the 999 cc Smart at 4.7 L/100 km (60 mpg-imp; 50 mpg-US) for the gasoline model and 3.4 L/100 km (83 mpg-imp; 69 mpg-US) for the diesel.[citation needed] The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) rates the vehicle at 36 mpg-US (6.5 L/100 km; 43 mpg-imp) combined.[9]

The diesel Smart was/is sold in Canada but was not very popular.

The big problem I see with the 500 is that it competes with the Mini which is already well established in that niche.

Those numbers quoted are not relevant to the USA EPA test. The Prius tests for like 20% better than the US numbers on that test (units corrected). It would realistically end up somewhere in the low 50 range on the USA EPA test.

Regardless, the Smart car's MPGs aren't the problem. The problem is the fact it is a ****ty car that fills a small niche. A diesel would make an already 'slow for these roads' car even slower, too.

The Mini has no other competition and is getting rather long in the tooth. I think the 500 could step in and grab many buyers from Mini showrooms.

In defense of small cars, I wish we had more manly roadsters ala the '50's and '60's. I mean really tiny, like the Jaguars, Maserati's and Ferrari's that weighed 2000 lbs or less. Of course in modern form they would weigh at least as much as a Miata, but as Emeril says, BAM! Let's have some cool cars that don't weigh 4000 pounds please.

How do you expect that to ever change if they don't start challenging the status quo? Or are you suggesting they just give up and go back to building all SUVs?

I put a few Mustang 2011 GTs on watch list on Ebay in early DEC. They are all still being offered. Those lists don't tell the whole story.

The only reason I can think why the Equator isn't selling is advertising. It's the Nissan Frontier, but looks a little better IMO.
Plus you'll save a couple grand and get a longer warranty.

The 500 will slot in closer to the Fit than the Mini. It only competes with the Mini on style... equipment, build and price wise it's a much lower spec car. That may change if we get the Abarth SS.

scion xD

they could have better sales if they came out with some special editions...

Scion XD <3 edition.

Scion XD BBQ edition.

stuff like that...

Obviously, once the XD has completely run its course, they should come out with another emoticon model to replace it.

I would totally buy a Scion colon dash p

XD XD XD

Doesn't help when there are no dealerships either. Nobody wants to drive a long distance just to service a car.

Oh yeah, the Equator is not offered in a manual...not a huge deal for most buyers.
