Post Poorman's HELLA TWIN style Mod - UPDATED PICS 020906

Ok, i was under my hood while installing my water temp sensor and happened to notice that our cars had two stock horns. I took them off and noticed that on the back, they are rated at 110 db. Hella Twin Supertones are rated at 118 db. I haven't heard hella's in firsthand, but was always doubting myself that i really needed to upgrade my horns, since IMO, our stock horns were quite loud. Its not that i couldnt afford it, just couldnt give myself enough reason to upgrade. Now, before I get flamed to death, i'm not putting these up for comparison in terms of "loudness" against the hella, nor is it as nice looking as the hella twin. I am just doing this for exterior style points, in which case, this mod for me was 100% free. The only thing i had to commit to complete this was some time. besides, the money i saved was already spent on my hotchkis sway bars and poltec endlinks. (pictures of sways and links on page 3 - installed on 02/12/06)

If you are not as frugal as i am Here is the **DIY Hella Super Tones Install ** courtesy of ESsTeAEyEe

***had to delete the prior pictures due to too many pictures in post***

I extended the stock horn connection and made two grounding hooks to connect inbetween the horn bracket and the radiator mount screw.

****its no longer bright red.****

!!!!!!!!!==============!!!!!!!!!==============!!!! !!!!!
Update

So i took alot of the advice given on here about the red. yes, it was too red. so i took specialev's advice to give it a dusting of black, but i also had some metallic silver spray paint and gave a dusting of that as well. the obnoxious red is gone, the relocation is gonna stay. and i think that will be the end for the horn mod, its pretty much gonna stay the way it is.

here are the pictures!

new paint job, looks metallic red in the sun, and kinda silver in the shade.

the remount

and the finished:

no offense..+1 for the effort. But supertones are like the cheapest thing next to gas you can do for your car.

none taken, i'm aware that its a cheap mod. but i personally didn't have a problem with how loud my horns are. but, like i mentioned, i put that money towards sway bars, which i think is a more worthy mod.

well if i said something that upset you I am sorry

but to me...if you can afford a STI then $50-60 for hella horn
is deffinately not expensive...i mean if you like the look of the horn
why not?

if you dont want to spend $50-60 then I think the stock horn
look just fine...painting it red make it look like some kinda toys
for a 3yr old...or a pair of nipples... as much as I apperciated
a whole write up for this mod but I think this make the car
look funny...

anyway...no hard feeling but I think I should explain it to you
if the thrumb down is for me...peace!

A for effort. I would say there is too much red going on though. You almost need like a bit of a black grill look on them. Maybe paint some black lines back on there?

Thanks for the idea.... Going to dump my old scrungy air horns (been thru 3 cars) and go with the hella's in that high-mount position...

Those should work great with my alarm too!

OMGHi2U Insert tongue into cheek...

I see no point. There is no way you're getting any hp gains out of this hilbilly ghetto mod. If you can afford an STi grill and a STi stencil for your TMIC, then you can certainly afford 7 or 8 gold- or platinum-plated 'see-u-in-Hella SuperTones.

Har har! I'm kidding!!!!1!! Really, that's a great idea and a great and easy DIY mod. Good thinking!

What kills me is how sooo many people around here are so quick quick to jump all over any DIY mod. And the simpler the mod, the more criticism it generates. Plus, I love the "If you can afford and WRX/STi, then you should be able to (insert modded part here)." There is a lot of satisfaction that can be had by doing a DIY mod, regardless of how 'cheap' it may be.

Again, nice mod. I like it! Keep rawkin' the DIY mods! (good pics, too!)

The difference in actual sound levels between 118 and 110 is not a simple '8' as you seem to imply. Decibels are a simplified way to compare two sounds.

For every 10dB of increase, the actual sound levels increase by a factor of 10. The difference in sound levels of 8dB means that 118dB is somewhere around 5 times louder than 110dB.

Sorry to burst your bubble.

I do like the look, though.

if you don't have 250$ to fork over for supertones and a set of springs... you shouldn't own a WRX... it isn't in your optimal price range...

I thought for every 10db it is double-loud

i.e. 40 db is twice as loud as 30db
40db is 4 times as loud as 20db

maybe not??

Generally you need a 6 to 10 dB increase in Spl for a perceived doubling in volume....

-or something like that..... course' hearing is highly subjective....

I like the idea, very clever.

One thing I may be a bit concerned with, is they are a very bright red, and they almost look like red lights to me. Don't wanna get a ticket for looking like an emergency vehicle.
