Question Calling all computer geeks (yes this means you)

My sister is looking to get a laptop for school. She has a VERY limited budget. Right now Dell and IBM have some advertised for about $1000 that's about right. any of you guru's have suggestions, she'll just use it for school work and mp3's.

thank you

Most of the toys today are pretty darn fast, so you shouldn't have too much of a problem just buying the one that fits the budget..

Dell has a reputation for good customer service, but if you want to read more, check out www.zdnet.com and look for the Vendor service ratings. You can also read some of the reviews on most of the name brands while your at it.

Most of the laptops don't come with much memory, but the stuff is dirt cheap right now. Some of them only come with 64MB, the more the better, but you only have possibly 2 slots to put memory in. Thus if it comes with 64MB, you may only have room for one more stick of memory, ask the salesdrone about it. Get at least 128MB or more.

I've been working with IBM ThinkPads for quite a while. I seldom have trouble with them. I work in an industial environment too, so they see some serious abuse. I have a few users still on ThinkPad 560's which are a PI 133mhz machine, they're slow, but they still work great. IMHO they're a great laptop and really hold up.

Chris Herron

I've had a Stinkpad and a currently have a Toshiba. Neither laptop is particularly great. The Stinkpad can take a beating but the peculiar IBM-isms on the hardware/software combo gets old. Big Blue lives in its own world.
The Toshiba is nice if you don't travel much. I've trashed a couple of laptop screens and case so far < 1 yr. The hinge between the screen and keyboard is very delicate.

I love my Dell desktop .... faster than a speeding bullet or WRX..

My vote is for a Dell.

I'm a Mac user, so I was about to say "iBook". But the prices are really not competitive at all. Starting at $1,299, with the CD-R version (with 128MB ram) $1,599... Even with educational discount, I still have to say "Yikes".

Both Dell and IBM build pretty reliable units. I like IBM's keyboards better, but overall I'm a bigger fan of Dell's stuff. If you can, have your sister try out a Dell and IBM unit to see which feels better.

Check out Dell's refurbished units as well - they come with a warranty, and preloaded software. The Inspiron 3800 series was a good economical unit. If she want's general homework duties and MP3's, I would go with around a 10GB drive, and maybe only 64MB RAM to save cost. A 14" screen will be fine.

Also - any Pentium III with Speed Step technology will only run at 500Mhz on battery power. If she is going to be primarily using the battery, then it's a bit of a waste to spend money and a higher speed processor. If mostly on AC, then higher speed is nicer, but above 600-700Mhz you'll notice it only in games or CAD work. (Heck, a Pentium 300 would probably be more than enough for basic school work.)

Lastly - save some pennies for good external speakers. Laptop speakers are too small to produce rich, deep sound. (The best laptop speakers I've heard were in the Compaq units that have the speakers in the palm rests.)

Happy shopping.

Gateway sells refurbs online...they still come with the standard Gateway warranty, which is really good in my opinion. I got a $2500 laptop for $1600.
