Default STi Not Making Advertised 300hp? To those with STi dyno sheets, HELP!

I've recently heard a lot of talk about the STi not making the factory-claimed 300hp in a few car chats as of late. How many others have heard the same thing?

I'm not complaining about it, because I love my STi just as much, even if it isn't making its claimed 300hp stock.

A lot of people have just been telling me, "You should've done your homework before buying one."

Understandably, every car is built different, and hp figures are going to vary a tad, but for those of you who have dynoed your cars, what are your experiences with the power output? Is Subaru short-changing us?

Thanks.

The 300hp Subaru claims is crank horsepower. 99.9999% of us who have dyno runs are getting results in wheel horsepower. Considering the AWD platform, which dyno manufacturer, temperature, humidity, elevation, and a bunch of other things, I wouldn't lose too much sleep over it.

Many if not all car manufactures will advertise the crank HP and not wheel horsepower. A car will never put all the crank HP to the wheels due to physics, i.e. driveline lose.

Happens with all cars and not just the STi.

I saw a bone stock SRT4 dyno at 235/254, thats about the only car that doesnt quote flywheel hp.

Well, they do quote crank hp- officially, at least. Insurance rates would increase if they advertised the actual amount. It would probably also be a problem because the Dodge / Chrysler V6's would "officially" put-out less HP than the Neon's 4-banger.

IIRC, the Forester turbo is "under-rated" by Subaru.

Thumbs up You have an STi, homework done!

I did my homework and from the looks of it so did you (you have an STi). I researched the 350Z, RX-8, EVO, Corvette, Mustang, G-35, blah blah blah ... The STi rules, handsdown. If it is making 3HP or 300HP it still kicks the $h!t out of anything I've ever owned, and most everything else out there. Lil bioches who whine about hp and don't pay attention to 1/4, 0-60, etc... are just frustrated with their own LACK of homework. Besides as one poster has said in this thread, dyno numbers vary. Enjoy your car, and "F" anyone who says otherwise!!

Viva la Subaru !!

Laterzzz

Jason

I love my STi

Dodge quotes flywheel hp for the STR4. It's just grossly underrated. It they quoted whp then I could sue their asses since the dyno I use reads only 215 whp for a SRT4.

SRT-4s are probably putting out closer to 250-260hp at the crank, than the advertised 230hp. A lot of SRT owners that I've talked to that have dynoed their cars are putting down around 230whp. More than likely, Dodge underrates the SRT-4 for insurance purposes.

As for the Forester 2.5XT, that thing is putting out nearly 260hp at the crank. If I recall, it's the same 2.5L that is in the STi, but making 2 lbs less boost than the STi.

I'm pretty certain that my STi is making its advertised 300hp. It has no problem pushing me back into the seat. I don't think it's lacking.

I'm in full agreement that these people claiming the STi isn't making its advertised horsepower are absolute toolboxes. Their 1/4 mile numbers speak for themselves.

Has anyone seen the Mobile flying horses commercial on TV? It shows how to free-up those horses in an STi.

That is now an old commercial. And it isn't Mobil, it is Quaker State. And QS adds to much wax to their oil IMO.

my baseline dyno with no mods was 255whp/262wtq...accounting for drive line gain(appx 20%) thats 306hp at the crank and 314 tq at the crank...last dyno was 328whp/332wtq...not bad for bolt-ons.

There is a chance the car may not quite make 300 BHP on 91 AKI in summer, but on 93 it definitely makes 300 at the crank (the original brochures/website specified 93 alongside the HP spec, but I think it has drifted into obscurity).

Subaru had tested 3 maps in the US, one that made over 300BHP, one that made less than 300 and was obviously more conservative, and then the "300 BHP" map that was finally chosen.

Bottom line, it makes 300BHP easily.

What mods do you have? I've heard for stock STis making anywhere from 220whp (depends on dyno) to around 260whp on the norm. You were right there...

To the other guy that ran 13.30s...nice run. What was your 60ft time and what rpm did you launch at?

That's what I figured. I found it very unlikely just from the seat of the pants feel of the car that it was making at least 300hp.

What kind of car did you come from? It definately has a different feel for power than most RWD cars IMO. But I know speed well enough to know how it compares to others.

I traded a 2002 1.8T GTI in on my STi. I also have a 1994 Camaro with a few minor mods, and they feel nearly identical once under way. I will estimate that the Camaro is putting out around 320-330hp, and the STi most definitely feels on par with it.

What's really funny is that they both feel very much alike in terms of acceleration, and driveability. I think the reason that I love the STi so much is because it just feels like a Japanese Camaro to me, if that makes any sense. These cars are so much different from eachother, but at the same time, they're so much alike. That's just my opinion, anyway. They're both just as equally satisfying to drive. The STi feels lighter on its feet, but the handling and acceleration characteristics feel very much alike to me. Strange........

Okay, don't start rumors.

The Forester XT is not putting out anywhere near 260 hp.
It's closer to 230-235 hp (like it's torque rating).

The Forester XT has a lot more differences than just 2 psi less boost
than the STI engine (it's actually about 3 psi by the way) and
it has different (smaller) turbo, different (smaller) intercooler, and SEVERAL
other differences.
The Legacy GT's version is closer to the STI's engine and boost levels, but still has several differences (turbo/intercooler).

Forester XT's dyno less than what Legacy GT's dyno at and FXT's dyno will be skewed a bit because of it's VERY aggressive 4.44:1 gearing which makes
it appear to have more hp than it really does.

Again, realistically, it's probably putting out 230-235 hp.

Oh, and on topic...don't worry about it, but from what I've seen the STI
IS making the 300 hp Subaru claims.
