90k timing belt and clutch
90k service coming up. PCV isn't listed, but I'm thinking they need to check it anyway.
Gonna do timing belt at the same time because 105k service interval is close anyways, and tranny needs to be drained too. Might as well. OK... so what about the clutch? I'm currently not having any noticeable clutch problem. I did a 5th gear pull in low revs and it doesn't appear to be slipping. But since they are taking everything apart, I'm wondering if it's worth changing the clutch out. Should I change the clutch out as preventive maintenance? Downtime is the most important issue for me. If it's gonna sit in a shop I'd rather have it be done all at once rather than have the car in the shop multiple times over a period of a year. I'm stage1 and don't plan on more power, OEM clutch has served me well and I'm probably gonna stick with it. I like the action and didn't like the action of the aftermarket clutch my friend has.

i did my clutch at 90k only because i spun a bearing and the engine was coming out anyways. its up to you, but if you dont need to, why bother. the engine or trans doesnt need to come out to do the timing belt. its going to be extra labor to do so, and easier to do the belt....up to you but i dont think its necessary yet to deal with it.

Depends on how you drive... How much manual trans experience did you have before you got the wrx? Lots of people push the stock clutch well past 150k. Others are on their 3 clutch by 90k. (I'm at 125k on the stock clutch with lots of heavy duty towing)

that's really a personal decision man....Do the math and see if its a financially better option to do it along with the timing belt rather then as a separate charge is my 2 cents. (compare quotes and see if its cheaper...comparing downtime, costs to rent a car if necessary...etc..)
If the clutch isn't slipping yet, it still has a decent amount of life left in it. When I FIRST noticed it slip, it was in 5th going up a steep hill - It wasn't until about 3 months later that I decided to do the repair, and by then it was slipping only when I ran it above 3.5~ rpm (even with it slipping, I still acted spirited from time to time...that didnt help my case) Point in case, a slipping clutch can be babied to last months on end - and when I did mine, it was still the stock clutch in there at 130k! I still was able to baby it for 3 extra months from the first noticeable slip - and I could of babied it another 2-3 months easily, but I had becauseracecar syndrome and wanted a new now nao. (id say I put on about 4-5k miles from the first slip, a lot of mountain driving too to go snowboarding) A clutch kit and flywheel will be about 470$ off of rallysportdirect, and labor to be determined by the mechanic - but Id say it can be done in a day depending on the mechanic. Honestly, if its not slipping tho, and you don't drive like an ***hole all the time - I think you could baby it 4+ months from the first noticeable slip. |
