Hey NASIOC!
Finally I have time to post a build thread(not really, I should be studying... procrastination at its finest). Well here is my 2012 DGM WRX Hatch. I purchased this beast of a daily driver on 11/12/11 and have been loving it since the day I bought it. The mod bug hit rather early for me and has turned my car into a fun obsession for me. It has been a fun way to spend my hard earned dollars!

I live next to some of the best canyons around (SoCal) and those are free, so I do canyon runs quite frequently. I have some rally/offroad blood running through my veins, and this car has been used accordingly a few times, not to any extremes, but still, I have fun with it.

I've been focusing on having a great all around car, something that is a beast on the highway, can hold its own on hard canyon runs, get me and my gear up to the mountains, and remain comfortable on my daily commute from Redondo Beach where I live, to Westwood where I work and go to school. I do a lot of research on this site, and feel that I have bought and put to use some real quality parts for being on my budget. I am always open to suggestions and take advise very well, so tips/words of wisdom are greatly appreciated.

I recently started Autocrossing and I am completely obsessed! After these tires are shredded, I will be switching to some better performance tires, probably some Star Specs. The car performed extremely well on the course.

As I post new things that I have done to the car, I will give my unbiased thoughts/opinions/feelings on whatever parts anyone is interested in as best I can. Learning and doing has been a blast! Thanks for checking out my car!

Thanks! It's been a fun ride! New tires going on tomorrow! Anybody have experience with the Hankook Ventus V12's? I found a place that would do a set for 500 mounted and balanced. Sounded pretty good to me.

Nice ride! I had the v12's on my m3 for a while so I got some good seat time with them. For the price, they are a good tire. However, I was less than pleased with them in the wet/rain. Terrible traction, couldn't grip for its life, and just felt unstable. Sidewalls are a bit soft and feel a bit numb on turns. The wear on them was nice and lasted a while. However, if it came down to it, I wouldn't get them again. I would be going with something different (Star Specs, RS3's, or PSS's). For 500 mounted and balanced, that's a good deal for sure. If you plan on tracking them, I would skip out and get something a bit better. Otherwise, for a DD, they are decent tires.

Thank you for the awesome review and advice! Good things to keep on mind. The only thing I'm worried about on the RS3s and Star Specs is the treadwear... but the PSS look fricken sweet. That was what I originally wanted.

Out of the 4 choices (v12, star specs, rs3, pss), the v12's will have the longest tread wear. The other 3 wear quicker than the others due to the softer/stickier rubber used. However, it's worth it. When you feel the grip of either of those 3 tires, you will be a convert and never cheap out on tires again. The PSS's are one of the best street tires out there right now. If I were you, I would get a set of them. I plan on doing the same to pair with my enkei nt03's.

So I think I've decided on the Federal 595 EVOs. Anyone heard anything about them? The few reviews I've heard have been good and they are so ridiculously cheap...

So it's time for a new clutch! Any personal experiences with clutches? I can't decide :/ also, debating on a lightweight flywheel, what do you guys think?

I recently ordered a 2013 DGM STI and you've given me plenty to think about. Thanks for taking the time to build this thread. I'll be coming back frequently to follow your progress.

Ah that's awesome! Congratulations! When are you supposed to get the car? I appreciate the kind words, modding and driving this car has been an amazing experience so far. Something about adapting to the new ways in which the car drives when you add a new part is just so addicting. Wish I had the reliability of that transmission you're going to have though! Are you going to start modding immediately? If so, I have things I wish I had done in a certain order and a certain way, and things that I wish I hadn't done. So if you have any questions, I love this stuff and I would love to help.

Thank you! Ah, I know I know. It needs some layovers BAD! It's funny, when you wrote this I was actually doing some research doing them. Have any brands you recommend? How easy is the install? I don't know why I'm so nervous to do this myself.

Unfortunetly I have to wait until May/June. Regardless, I have already begun making purchases (Rally Armor Mudflaps). Cobb AP and JNA V-lip front spoiler are next.

What are your feelings towards modding? Please elaborate on the things you did and the things you wish you didn't. I'm almost certain I will flash to Stage 1 within the first 500 miles to get rid of the stock tune. Thoughts?

Feel free to PM me. Just make sure you keep the updates coming.

Aw, well at least that's not TOO long! Now you just have something to look forward to. And it's good that you can do a lot of research between now and then. Well good call on the mudflaps. I waited a little bit too long to get some on my car :/ only took a few gravel roads to make me realize how desperately I needed them. A front lip is going to go on my car really soon, that's another great thing to get first, they make the cars look amazing.

Well modding for me is to get every bit of performance out of the car that I can while keeping it as a DD. As you can see, I haven't done much as far as looks go yet (partially because I live in LA and something will always get scratched or dented and I don't feel like crying every day). But another reason is I don't like to draw too much unnecessary attention to myself, mostly because of the police.

Things for you will be a little different just because you are starting with an STi. I like your idea of getting rid of the stock tune, but I would wait until after the break-in for that. Accessports are great, I have one and I love it; there are so many great features on it that are both useful and fun to use. The STi performance is great already, but the first thing I would do before anything would be to buy thicker sway bars with endlinks if you plan on tracking or doing canyon runs. After that, and I hate to say it because it does make me worried every once in a while that I can't take my car to dealerships for minor warranty work, would be to slap a turboback on that thing. I truly LOVE my Q300 with the Invidia catted downpipe; It sounds mean as hell. It is loud, but to me, it is perfect. The power delivery is vastly improved and it makes these cars beastly to drive. Use the accessport to tune the car and decide whether you want a protune yet or not. After those few mods, I would chill for a while, be happy with the car, and just learn it. Learn how to drive it, form your own opinions on what needs improvement. The STi comes great out of the box, but these mods will make it amazing.

Thank you! You should come out to some of our meets and drives some time! Check out the Westwood/LA meet thread.

As far as the rce blacks on stock shocks go.... Hmmm....

Decent. But I wish I didn't do it. The minor drop these gave looks perfect though, but I don't feel they gave me much of a performance increase compared to stock when paired with the stock struts. However, I do think they would be great with some upgraded struts. I have heard good things about the swift springs though, I would try those out if I were you and if you aren't interested in spending the extra money on struts.

If I could do it all over again, I would have waited on these. Buy the rce/Bilstein/GTworx package and call it a day. Save up the extra pennies. It will be worth doing and you won't have to get two alignments

HAHAHA! Yeah, I don't have my own garage with tools, so my awesome friends let me come over and use all of their stuff. This is just one of the places I work on the car. But you know what, that rug makes the cold nights under the car so much more tolerable/enjoyable. Thanks for the compliment on the car
