Default Discouraged WRX Future Buyer

I've been looking over WRXs for the last few months, and I'm ultimately discouraged from ever buying one.
1. The used car is market is horrendously over-priced for even a base model.
2. Base MSRP for a WRX 26500 (Give or Take), Dealerships are listing prices some 2-4k more, matching Premium and Limited Base MSRP.
3. These car do not depreciate, they actually appreciate ( Which is great if you bought one already not so great for someone who wants one.)

I'm a single 25 year old, who desperately wants an 2011-2012 White Hatch, but for the prices they are asking...I couldn't possibly justify a 450-500 Car payment...

And I don't like the body style of the current Impreza...especially rumors that the power plant will be a 2.0 in the next gen WRX and STi.

I don't know if I'll be ever shifting gears in a white Subaru WRX, in the roads of Upstate NY.

which is exactly why i bought a new one, instead of paying 500 less for a car with 20k miles and 1-2 years old.

Just because they're quoting you prices like that doesn't mean that's what you have to walk away paying...I got mine brand new at way less than msrp including shipping.

Everyone who bought new went through the same dilemma you are in right now. But clearly there's something to it if the subie culture is so strong.

The car's value is so strong for a couple reasons. They don't make that many (relative to most other cars) and other people are willing to pay that much for it! Give it a drive before you judge. And work with several different dealerships to work it down to a price you're willing to pay.

Use the V.I.P. program. When I bought my '09 WRX 5-door new, I got it for a crazy good price. You have to plan ahead though.

i have a new limited for low 300's a month. Save as much as you can and trade something in to put money down. Think i put 8k down on my car. Also you can negotiate on the interest rate too.

Get on the interwebs. Look for dealers a little farther from you. Send them an email from their site saying you're ready to buy. The more flexibility you give them, the better they can do. My last LGT....I went to the dealer and told them I wanted a manual LGT, no options, whatever color, I don't care. They had to go to Maine to find a manual. I got a great price and the car had 200 miles on it. Worked for me.

If you have to be picky and get this shifter and that color and these wheels, then have fun looking for 2 years. Internet sales people will know you're outside of their usual area and so will give you a better price right off the bat. Be sure to ask for their price including their bogus doc fees (their admu of the 21st century).

Older Subarus are more expensive because of the earthquake and interruption in supply. It is still affecting values. They will come down. You don't see such a bubble with Legacy based vehicles as they are built in the US and had more of a supply of parts available when the plant in Japan shut down. I'm buying a WRX soon and am sort of kicking myself that I sold my LGT a year and a half ago. I can't even get an 07 WRX for what I sold my 08 LGT for then. That's supply and demand, though.

Call more dealerships. You should be able to get invoice pricing. Don't be scared to buy a $100 plane ticket to fly somewhere and drive it home.

^This.
I went a little older than you are looking, but found a one owner '06 with 37k on the clock after looking for a LONG time. Got it for 4k less than blue book, and if I'd seen the ad a week earlier, I could have gotten it on here from the original owner for $1500 less than that, but unfortunately she had already traded it in. I flew from NJ to Florida and spent two days driving back, I think I was stationary in Florida for like 90 minutes, lol.

Don't care though, after 10 years of wishing, hoping, and plotting from behind the wheel of my 01 Outback, I've finally got my little boost wagon

Hang in there. Keep looking. Good luck!

I got internet pricing from local dealers on the last day of the month. I showed up to one, got a quote for $27k on a 2012 Lmt...but walked away. I then took it to another dealer and said 'beat this number and I'll buy from you'. I ended up at $26,600 on a 2013 5dr Lmt WRX...the internet is can be your ultimate tool.

The used market on these vehicles is definitely overpriced, especially since most used WRX and STi purchases is more of a gamble than your average vehicle due to the kind of abuse most owners put these vehicles through. As is the case with most performance vehicles in some way or another...New vehicle prices are probably coming close to exceeding its originally intended market here in the US, but I think that's happening with most vehicles these days in general due to the current value of the dollar, rising vehicle costs due to mandated safety features and fuel economy standards.

The crazy used prices are what make me happy as an owner. I've never had a car that appears to hold its value so well.

I did the internet thing and paid invoice. Funny thing is, while waiting for the vehicle to come in, a few slightly used 12's came on the market, they were almost as much as I was paying for the car I ordered!

Price wise, I don't think there are many decent cars now a days that don't cost over $30K. Hell I just got my wife a 13 pilot and it was $40K! Prices of everything are going up. Sadly its a sign of the times. (gas was 0.95/gal when I was in high school )

If you want a base hatch with no options, you can find one for $24,XXX fairly easily. Like Jack said...expand your search range.

If you are willing to fly to Chicago, I'll give you 2 sales guys to call that will give you a very good deal. No hassle at all. But judging by your thread I doubt you'd want to do that

I work at a dealership in Upstate NY. The preowned WRX market is very slim. We get one or two in a month and we're one of the largest dealerships for quite some time. Honestly in most circumstances it's hard to justify buying preowned when you can get a new base for $500 more, but it really depends on the car and situation. You need to remember, if you were the guy that traded it in you would want top dollar, and we're faced with balancing keeping customers happy on their trade, customers happy with their purchase on the other end, and making some kind of profit. Preowned WRX's are definitely a tough market.

I'm still stuck in the land of 02-07, my heart will always lie back in that era. Still overpriced for the years, and finding low mileage is tough if that's something you care about, but in my opinion it's the way to go.

I had been searching for my next car for over 2 years. going back and forth between several different models. when I finally decided the wrx was the one, I talked to my local (I'm based in San Diego) dealerships and tried finding preowned. at the time preowned were super tricky to find and at one point the sales manager called me at night excited that they were getting a 2009 wrx with 48k miles and I could take it home for just under $24k. this was last year. I thought he was kidding. but he said that it was just hard to get and keep any wrx (new or used) on the lots since they sell themselves. I kindly (I felt insulted - seriously that much for a 3 year old car?!) declined and waited. the wait definitely paid off - I found my baby in Minnesota! Now my local dealership is full of 2013 wrx and sti, but still asking over msrp. it's the nature of the location I guess. Because people are willing to pay that much they can sell them for that much.

Sounds like you need to get out on foot and actually shop around more. I ordered a 2013 WRX Sedan with a couple of options for invoice. You're in charge of what you want. The lower then MSRP prices are out there.

I just picked up a 2011 floor model with 180km on it for 29k+ tax. Americans may think this is high, but for a Canadian that is a amazing price. MSRP on a 2011 WRX Limited was about 39k so 10k off for a brand new car warranty starting from my pick up date was an amazing deal. I put 10k down and my payments are 435 a month for a brand new WRX. Keep looking around, you will find the one you want

Search, search search. I found my 2013 SWP Hatch with 3k miles on it in upstate NY about a month ago. Base model with fog lights, sti shifter, and some nice extras (all weather mats, rallyarmor mud flaps, tint, etc.) for 25k. I searched long and hard for this exact car. Patience is a virtue!

Play dealerships against each other and don't let them think you're dying to own the car. I put $5K down on a base WRX with no options, got the 1.9% interest rate and it was $26K out the door and that includes sales tax (6.35% in CT) and all the little fees like registration. My payment is $375 a month.

I work for a dealer.

Go here:

http://www.truecar.com/prices-new/su...n-wrx-pricing/

Plug in your zip code and customize the vehicle the way you want. Find a dealer on that site that accepts TrueCar pricing near you.

Put your flame suit on for this:

DO NOT GO IN THERE ACTING LIKE JOHNNY BAD@$$ WANTING $500+ OFF OF THE LOWEST PRICE. THEY WILL LAUGH AT YOU AS YOU WALK OUT THE DOOR!

Simply ask for a reasonable deal, and you shall receive. Most likely, no more than $500 under invoice will apply.

And suck it up....you're gonna have higher payments with nothing down. or low money down. I will be picking up my 13 STI in late May. $38.5K OTD. Oh well.....I'm putting lots down.

I agree with everything swpngold just said. The deals are out there, you just have to look around pretty good, and might actually be better if you find something alil further away from you. Either travel south, or go north (although im not sure how their car market is). But done here in south jersey, i've been seeing '13's going for 26-27k. And like you said, the cars dont depreciate quickly, so youre going to find alot of 11's and 12's with miles on them going for the same price.
also like swp said about playing dealerships against eachother, you can do the same exact thing with banks. Keep shopping around until you find an interest rate that you can live with.
