Default Whining noise while driving?

Hello everyone new here. I have a quick question was driving home tonight without the radio on I could hear while I was in 5th gear a whining noise while accelerating it was to loud but would go away when I let off the gas. It doesn't do it at idle and haven't hear it in lower rpms or other gears. Any ideas thanks!

Maybe a boost leak. Check all vacuum hoses and hoses coming off the turbo. Also check the bpv is bolted snug if you've messed with that recently.

No haven't messed with anything it's all stock. Really only noticed it today while in 5th and noise stops when I take my foot off the pedal. Don't think this is trans diff related? Thanks for the quick response!

Haha I just had this problem if it's only 5th gear at speed your hearing likely 1 of 2 things wind noise over the mirrors try folding them in just to see

Or

Front diff is whining

I had this problem an found out for me it was the wind and mirrors others have said they tried that but no fix and found out it was the front dif but was not a problem and not damaging anything

Google it and you can see tons of threads about it.

Hope this helps you

Can rule out the mirrors it only happens while I'm on the gas and immediately goes away when I let off the gas

this happens to my car. fill out your profile so we can see what you drive. i have an 01 RS 5 speed and that happens to me in fourth gear. whines then goes away when i let off the gas. i believe its either differential related or possibly transmission

I get whining like that sometimes. It only goes away when I give the evil eye to my kids in the back seat.

If you'd get your wife out of the trunk, and let her ride in the car you'd hear a lot less whining. I tell you, if I had a nickle for every time I heard 'When I slip these restraints, you're in for it!' Whine whine whine whine. <makes talking hand motion> She was much more agreeable when she rode up front. (it was her Birthday)

I tell you...good times...good times.

First, which car/year do you have?

Does it sound like a supercharger whine? If so, check your AC idler pulley.

My guess is the AC idler pulley. Take the AC belt off and go for a drive.

It's because the bearings on the pulley are going bad. Even with the AC off the belt/pulley still spins, the AC clutch just isn't engaged.

Wouldn't I hear that all the time then. Even at idle. Or just under acceleration?

its likely your rear differential, does the noise happen right around 58-65mph?

I had the exact same thing happen in my 08 wrx in 5th gear. Happened to be the center diff, and 4,000$ of warranty work later.

If it were the differential gears. The ring gear may be worn, or out of true.
