Default H6 swap Questions??

I was wondering how hard would it be to swap my MY01 sedan engine for a H6.
I was told that they only come with automatics. TRUE??
I know that Posches come with flat 6s' and manual trannis'.
Could I use that?

Or should I just build up my 01' SOHC?

I don't know if the H6 would fit but your looking at a full ecu and motor swap. And with the H6 Being such a new motor to the scooby market...it would be cheaper to go with the svx 6 cyl...just forwarning. you looking at a big project ahead of you. Don't let the naysayers say it would be to expensive (it will NOT be cheap) or the naysayers say that it can't be done...because someone has to be the first. If your willing to spend that cash and then in the end have a h6 and a cut up car that won't run...then go ahead.

I personally say the ej25 is a good motor. You get the right internals, correct turbo, good engine management and a gear set that can hold. You can end up with a beast that would be a very competive machine...

Well SVXs only came in auto. And the new H6s only come in auto. Just like I already told you SEAN! lol. I am sure that it will fit, BUT, you will neeed the ECU, Motor, Tranny, Crossmembers, and mayb e steerign rack, and other engine bay parts... Not worth it IMHO. And the Porsche tranny wont work BECAUSE like i already told you, a Porshce is a rear motor rear drive car. So if you used it your car would have to either be made FWD, or RWD, or if you shelled out like 10k for a Porsche AWD tranny then MAYBE after you swapped out the floorpan you could run it.

Adam, The SVX motor should bolt up to the tranny and work in the factory engine crossmember. Thats if both use the same engine mount style (round or square). I don't know about the H6 as the engine mount may have changed.

You will need the H6, engine harness, ECU + mic parts like maf.

I'd reccomend a switch to a B4 RSK/GTB 5spd tranny with a uprated organic clutch.

LOL yeah i would go with the svx motor as well, or just modify your ej25. Also you should consider swaping to a usdm ej20. A couple guys here down in CA can do it. I have heard that the exhaust runners for the new H6 are not designed that well. So it might be difficult to modify it. Also with the EJ series engines you would have a lot more room to work with. The engine plus all the extra parts needed for the H6 transplant could get you a ej20 swap and some. Just my $0.02

Well the reason I said that the tranny would have to be swapped is because when Subaru developed the SVX they did not have a tranny made that would be strong enough to hold th power that the SVX puts out. Thus putting a stock RS tranny in there you will have to be very careful or you will break it.

Default go for it!

I've been researching this myself and I'm positive it will work...even though it's also an auto to manual swap. You need a crashed outback though..as others have already noted the random parts that will be needed (and the fuel pump?). Anyway, by my calculations, if you put the H-6 in a 2002 RS then, the 212 hp plus the extra weight (motor, Xmember, etc.) will make the car feel as it would with 200-205 hp before the swap. 18 lb/hp before, 14.5 lb/hp after. Just more info to consider...

See....that's why I want to try this. I mean I could have the heads worked and add an exhaust, turbo, and FMIC. That would probably put me over 300hp running maybe 7psi.

BTW....I think it will be a few years before I attemp this. Right now I'm just going to work on my car and engine. Then when I have the money and a LOT more experience I'll buy a spare car
and go to town. (with some help...I hope).

H6 in an RS. This sounds like a great project! Some things to consider are that indeed you'd have the engine mgmt out of a "donor" outback. I don't know enough about how the mating is with the H6 and the RS tranny, but it is always possible to make the mate. Worst case, you'd need to have a tranny intake shaft modified or made, depending on how the flex plate is mated on the H6, a flywheel would need to be chosen, modified and perhaps balanced to the engine (I know 5.0's, not subies). The mating of the tranny to the block, if not a direct bolt up may require some custom fabrication. The biggest stumbling block might be the fact that you'd be tying up an RS for a while.

Assumptions:

1) a stronger tranny already exists (since there are so many RS-T's)
2) stronger diffs would eventually be swapped in
3) supercharger would make this a real competitor for anything out there.

This is interesting. I'll have to do some engine compartment measurements on our outback and RS. Anyone else looking for a project?

Jack, it uses the normal EJ mounting pattern. No idea if the Crank has the same bolt pattern on it and the thickness of the bellhousing on the motor side, but its almost certain to be the same as the EJ series, since its FREE to do so, and is cheaper to build a car with such, as it bolts right up to the Auto tranny w/o any new parts needing to be designed and manufactured.
