1 Furnace Filter = 8 Cabin Air Filters
OK, I'm annoyed that Home Depot no longer sells the $15 "ultra allergen" furnace filters... now you have to pay $25 to get the best "maximum allergen" ones. Whatever, it's still a heckuva lot cheaper than the Subaru ones. A couple quick hacks with the office paper cutter and some low-VOC duct tape, and voila -- a 2-year supply of cabin air filters! W00t!
P.S., a little birdy told me that the size for GC/GM/GF and 1st gen Foresters is 8 3/8" x 6 1/8". For these cars you will need to cut open the plastic in the area just before the heater core if there has never been a filter installed previously. More info for newer cars: http://www.cars101.com/subaru/airfiltration.html

The hymen of which you speak is located just to the left of the blower motor under the glovebox. Cut along the outline with a utility knife. The OEM Subie kit comes with a screw-on replacement cover, but whatever, I just duct tape it up and call it done, nobody ever sees it and it makes it easier to replace the filter -- rip out duct tape, install new filter, tape back in!
