Default 2006 20G Lag

I have an 06 STI with a 20g and all supporting mods, except the fuel pump which is in my glove box.
My spool time is around 3800-4500rpms?

FMIC....maybe this is slowing me down?

Also, when I turn my MBC, it doesnt seem to do anything.

I had someone tune it but I know its got more potential. Can this thing spool quicker?

my Blouch 20g spools right around there on an STi TMIC.

Some of the newer XT stuff, billet wheel items out there may help some, but it really depends on your goals at the end of the day. For my purposes, I kinda wish I stuck with my previous EVOIII 16g. But now I have a laggy turbo that is great on long highway pulls.

Boost leak test and also test for exhaust leaks. Seafoam works great for the exhaust leaks. I'll bet you have a leak somewhere. I also assume its tuned as well? Depending on the 20g it should be anywhere from as low as 3200-3800 with the newer xtr stuff that's almost a 3071r.

I'd recommend that fuel pump ASAP too buddy. Hope you figure it out.

Why are you turning the knob on the MBC? Why do you have an MBC? Who is "someone" tuning it?

I'm wondering how crappy this thing runs if Joe Schmoe tuned it down the road, and your turning random crap and have parts not installed.

You didn't mention which gear gives you 3800 rpm full boost. You certainly need to get it tuned to get proper performance. If you're seeing like 3800 rpm in 2nd or 3rd gear than that's about right. I got around 15 Psi @ 3000 rpm in 6th and around 15 Psi @ 3300 rpm in 4th.

Cheers,

Jasper.

I'd almost make a bet that you have a boost leak. Check all your intercooler pipes.

Well, the car was "protuned" but not by a pro. Yes, Ik everyone is going to **** on me for not having this all done correct the first time and Ive read all the threads on doing it right.

Lots of issues came up along the install and tune with the people I was working with.

I will get it retuned and have the pump installed and then I think itll be at full potential.

Im in orlando, fl and I was thinking about going to titan motorsports, what do you think? I dont hvae too many options.

3800-4500rpm's is a really big range. It will depend greatly on what gear you are in and what rpm you start the pull at. Both of these things can have a huge effect.

I have a 20G XTR and FMIC, with a MBC/EWG setup. Third gear on my WRX is similar to fourth on your STI and I see 20psi by about 3500rpm's and 25psi by about 3800rpm's.

http://www.benjohnsonphotography.com...xj6hPbg-XL.jpg

This is third gear starting a WOT pull at 2k. If you're just going around town at floor it at 3500rpm's you'll spool considerably later. If you were to do a fourth gear pull from 2000rpm's (in your car) I would expect to see 20psi by 3800rpm's or earlier.

I had a Blouch 20G-XT and with a TMIC reached peak boost around 3700 rpm in 4th gear. 3700 is pretty good IMO for a 47 pound turbo. I believe what you're experiencing is normal. Also, the hotside size of your turbo will have an effect on this too (larger hotside = slower to reach peak boost). Are you coming from a VF? A lot of times when people go from a stock VF to a bigger turbo, they miss that low RPM punch of the VF. Even though they're making more power almost everywhere, the power comes on differently so it takes some getting used to.

Im going to go do some pulls and try and get some videos and then you guys can see how it comes on. I cant really tell exactly what RPMs, since my eyes are usually on the road lol.

I appreciate all the feedback! Helpful place.

I do have a FMIC, which might cause some of the lag. But I think mine might be somewhere around normal.

Ill post back!

Alright heres a quick pull, third gear, nothing huge , but my foot was hardly on the gas at 3k RPMs and then I put it all the way down and it looks to be right after 4k i hit max boost, around 19 PSI

What do you guys think?

A dyno tune would help immensely.

Details on the 20g? Sounds like a minor leak somewhere and a doo doo tune. With a fmic and a 20g I wouldn't say it's uncommon to spool at 3800 or so ... but to fluctuate as much as 700 rpma seeing full boost something's wrong. Especially if you are pulling In the same gear.

Blouch 20Gxt. It's brand new lol.
The mechanic was ****ty and so is the tune.
Knowing this a few months ago i would've stayed away however I got some labor out of the many issues that arose.

My next step is the fuel pump and a tune.

I think I'll be set after that.

What PSI should I be running? I was around 23 or so but thought that was too high for stock block so I changed the spring out myself to a 19lb spring. It's 17.5 but maxed at 19.

You should be set at whatever you're tuned for. You aimlessly poking around and turning knobs and changing springs without tuning is your issue. If you feel it's too high then bring that to the tuners attention and if he can't thoroughly explain why it's safe or not, leave quickly.

Stop ****ing with stuff and get it to a good shop. Please

And I'm not flaming you or trying to be a dick. Just trying to get a point across. I wouldn't run it too hard until it gets a good look over

No I get your point. The thing is the car has been running ok, and even my other friend who owns an STI has driven it and thinks its fine, but could make much more power with a real tune. He understands the ****ty work done to the car.

If you read my previous post, I was asking where I should go get a tune?
I dont want to drive all over FL to get a tune for my car if you know what I mean....

I'm not totally familiar with that area, maybe post in your regional forum and see if anyone has any recommendations. However if you can diagnose any leaks you could get an etune from a tuner on this site if you can data log. This may be a good cost effective route since you have a decent base tune to work with. I've heard very good things about phatbotti tuning. Many people get etunes from them and they work with high power platforms pretty often. If I were you I'd message them I'm pretty sure sti Mikey comes around Florida occasionally. If I had to pick a tuner, that'd be the one.

Sure, instead of running like dog ****, it will have a much more linear power band. It will be much smoother, you might see boost a little sooner, although compared to what other people see full boost at, you're around the common grounds.

Seriously, just stop messing with stuff. Don't switch out any more springs, dont turn any more knobs. Get it to someone that knows what they're doing, explain everything that you've had done, what you've changed, etc. and let them take care of it from there. I guarantee you'll be much happier with the results... You'll also have a better running car and a significantly decreased risk of blowing up your engine. Good luck.

Check the SE Region Section, it looks like Mikey is going to be in Jacksonville in January 2013. He also comes down to Ft. Myers to Import Image Racing as well. I also know that Drunkmann was going to be coming down to Tampa in the near future (possibly this weekend), so just keep checking the local forums.

Aside from echoing all of the other advice already posted, I would also advise to stop doing WOT Pulls until you know for sure your car and tune is healthy. Does your other "STi Friend" know it is good by confirming the IAM is good and you aren't knocking? Do you have a way of logging your car to make sure your AFRs are good and you are knock free?

You are throwing a lot of variables (changing your MBC and EWG Springs) at a tune that you are claiming is half-assed. I would recommend showing a little bit of self control with your right foot until you know that your car is 100% dialed in.

3rd Gear pulls:

~3400 RPMs 11/12 PSI
~4500 RPMs 19 PSI max boost

Fuel Pump installed.
No knock.
Smooth power band.

Not much changed from my initial tune, save a few adjustments, but I definitely think it makes more power.
