Are these new Blue oil filters any good?
Hey guys,
I went to buy an oil filter from the dealer today and noticed "Honeywell" on the label. I now know that these are made by Fram and have never heard many good things about Fram. On my way home I passed by a Napa and also bought a Napa Proselect (21365) oil filter too. I am trying to decide which one to keep. Any opinions on either filter? I believe that the Napa one is made by Wix? Thanks

Grab a beer or two, and read.
"Wilbur, stop beating me. I'm dead already!!!!!!" Thread 1 (Thanks to Paranoid Fabrications and CynicX for posts 1 and 58, respectively) Post 1 in Thread 1 Post 58 in Thread 1 (both posts (1 and 58) show pictures of Fram and new Subaru filters) Post 148 in Thread 1 (bypass valve testing - thanks to 09rexwagon, who did these tests.) General idea - new blue filter is a Fram with Subaru-spec bypass valve setting. (see post 7 of this thread, below) Thread 2 Post 225 in Thread 2 (More analysis - link to other site, thanks to SubLgt) Thread 3 This is mostly an opinion thread, the only point I was trying to make is saying "OEM" doesn't tell the whole story. It's better to know exactly what you are getting. The OEM filter manufacturer has changed several times, so just because you see a post about the OEM filter, it might not be the same filter you can buy today, or tomorrow. CynicX joined in and added more analysis of the new filters by Honeywell. Post 129-More Analysis from CynicX and discussion about oil filters. Thread 4: Unabomber's Oil FAQ This thread also includes a filter discussion. GREAT STUFF. (Thanks to Unabomber, 09rexwagon and many others) Post 150 - Toyo Roki bypass does not meet Subaru Spec. (thanks to 09rexwagon) Post 170 - Differences between Fram and Honeywell's Subaru Filter. (Thanks to 09rexwagon) Post 160 - importance of anti-drainback valve. (Thanks to 09rexwagon) "Bob is the Oil Guy" thread about Subaru oil pump specs and how they relate to Filter Bypass (Thanks to 09rexwagon and many others) (Recent edit - added credits) (More Recent edit - added CynicX's posts in thread 3) (Even more Recent edit - added more info.) The true answer is: depends...If you run short oil change intervals the blue-stocker is more than adequate. People can debate until they're blue in the face about how many pleats a filter has or how good the construction is, but the fact of the matter is that, unless you're cleaning up a dirty motor with a good-cleaning oil or running extended OCI there is no need to buy the biggest, baddest oil filter. A cleaner motor doesn't really deposit all too much in there, anyway. On your next oil change take the filter apart and see for yourself. JMO. Most want the best of the best, regardless. Make sure to buy Redline and change it every 2kmi, too just to be on the safe side.

I've been using them with 5-6k oci's on my dd RS with 180k miles which sees 70+miles a day. No issues here.

In our high oil flow engines, the bypass pressure is more important than the filtering aspect of the filter. I have contacted bosch (and in turn, purolator) about making a Subaru filter (pure one) with a 20-25 psi bypass pressure like the 14460 was but in the new smaller diameter that will fit the new Imprezas.....waiting to hear back, but I'm doing 3-4k OCIs on the OEM filter till my warranty is up and hopefully by then a good aftermarket will have a filter for us.
Think about it...when you think that you have an awesome K&N, Amsoil, Mobil 1 filter on your Subie and you have 11ty billion pleats, but your bypass pressure is 10psi like they are, then how frequently are you running in bypass mode? In which case, it doesn't mean crap if you have an amazing filtering media with many pleats, your oil is bypassing the filter so you get NO filtering. Just my opinion. I've tested the OEM Blue filter as mentioned above. It is the only filter other than the 14460 that meets Subaru's spec (other than the black Tokyo Roki filter of course). |

(note, you can't convey tone of voice in a text post. I don't mean that to sound like I'm incredulous. I work for a US manufacturer of Japanese designed products, and we often ship products from a US vendor to Japan for testing, but sometimes we do testing here, and report the results to Japan. I just wonder which is the case here.) |
