First 2 month's owning my WRX / Snow
So I have owned my 2012 wrx for almost 2 months and put 3,500 miles on it already and got it's first oil change at RYE FORD SUBARU.. Even on a busy morning without an appointment I was in and out in about an hour. So far the service department seems a lot better than most of the Nissan dealers I dealt with but nothing close to infiniti's. So far the car has been great to me and am waiting to actually Mod it till i hit about 10-15k. Now the snow... This year the winter has been very mild. I know the tires are summer tires and should not be used in the snow.. I learned this lesson years ago when i got stuck leaving the dealership with my ALTIMA SE-R which came with stock summer Potenzas in about a half an inch of snow. Driving this car with the stuck summer tires will get you wherever you have to go if you drive CAUTIOUSLY. I engine braked for the most part and always allowed myself distance to stop. I actually feel that this car would handle a million times better than my brothers AWD infiniti M35x if they had the same all season tires on them haven driven both. This car is extremely easy to put sideways and maintain control of it while doing so...
Foot Notes Changed oil at Rye Ford Subaru at 3,500 miles and had a good experience Drove in snow with summer tires and didn't die. Subaru's AWD > infiniti's Drifting with summer tires is a lot of fun, especially in HUGE open parking lot.

yup. pretty much what you said. in any winter conditions, with appropriate tires if you SLOW DOWN, take your time, leave yourself room to stop, don't follow close, etc...
but at the same time i won't let anyone scare me with "winter driving" as it's quite easy to do if you follow the above rules. more than that take a winter driving/safety course. learn how to properly control your car in emergency situations. it's a very valuable tool. one that you might not always need, but the experience is priceless. Most people, when they find themselves in a panic situation they just stomp the brakes, lock their arms and wait til they hit something. More than not, that is not the way to react in an emergency situation, winter or not. |

I got my car late in the season last year (Feb) and Tirerack was out of steelies so I went with the stock summers for a month til winter was over. You can certainly drive on them, but they really are like ice skates. I felt like AWD + traction control gave me a bit of an advantage over my old Civic SI, but I feel much more comfortable this winter with the Blizzaks on....and I still got to do donuts in the parking lot where I valet .

Thanks, I did forget to mention a "Casualty". The front bumper "vent" on the drivers side fell off somewhere and didn't realize it until i got home. I did replace the fog light bulbs a week ago and it looked like the covers were on ok.. I guess I have to go to the dealer and find out how much they're going to charge me for a piece of plastic. I seriously hope a dealer close to me has the cover in stock.

AWD doesn't help you stop... Most people think all-seasons are good in the snow, those same people have never driven a car with 4 snows below them...

I always get a laugh out of the dummies who constantly spout BS about how summer tires are fine in the snow "if you're careful". It's not about being able to stop or turn when you have 100ft to do it, it when you have to make an EMERGENCY stop because something unexpected happens. Before some idiot comes and says "but if you are careful blah blah blah", it's called an emergency for a reason, only a complete moron believes that they can anticipate every situation.
OP- no this wasn't directed at you, inevitably someone will come in here to tell us all how to drive and that we must suck at it because we're smart enough to use the right equipment for the job. Preemptive smack down |

I get a kick out of people who spend 30k+ on a car then dont bother to spend 500 dollars on winter tires. If you drive somewhere where there is going to ice/snow for a few months every year, it is worth your investment. Its actually cheaper in the long run to run snow tires in the winter if you drop down to 16" tires. (which many owners would suggest). Not to mention your insurance deductible alone is probably worth more then a set of winter tires. |

Winter tires are cheap insurance. Instead of sliding into that curb and having to pay your $5-1000 deductible to repair the damages, you were able to stop on time and are now along your merry way.
And all season tires aren't much better. |

I'm from New Rochelle. Like I said I had winter tires on my previous car and will be getting a winter set on 16 inch rims soon. Thanks for the insight though

Many stories of winter tire conquests....they are all better than all-season (or summer, only caught off guard) stories. |

Even here in Ottawa the winter conditions are generally wet/cold as opposed to snow covered. I put Pirelli Sotozeros 225/50 17 on my STI and am very satisfied, good tire reasonable price. Winter rims are MSW. Total cost about $1000 + tax. Insurance reduced about $60/yr for running winter tires.

Studded tires are ****ING amazing on ice/snow covered roads. They grip so well it's like driving on pavement. |

Nice thread bump! With winter coming, it's a good reminder to drive on appropriate tires for your area. In Flatland Illinois, nice all-seasons work great for me. If I was dealing with mountains, I would definitely buy dedicated snows.

glad i'm not the only crazy one.
i'm picking up winter tires in any case even if i dont live far from work i want to know that with my tires and snow that i wont skid/slide when i try to stop. its WI i love snow expect me to be thrashing my subie around in OEM tires for once and then throwing on winter tires. still searching for tires w/ rims its better than constantly mounting your tires for each season. |

okay so heres my question i live by the beach.. not in the mountains. Im not trying to drive up in a snow storm. but i do like chasing some pow.
so i cant be driving around on snow tires from the beaches up to the mountains, right? ive heard its bad for the tires to be driving on them at high speeds for extends periods (50 mph+) what would be a solution to this? |

winter tires easily handle normal 75mph speeds... what kills them is high pavement temperature. Lenghty drives on sunny days at 80F will use the rubber quite fast.
