Longer Wheel Stud for 2004 wrx
so I cross threaded one of my lugs this weekend and decided that I wanted to go with some longer/stronger studs. I did a search and found some pretty old posts about the HR studs(HR1025560 5mm 56mm Stud 12x1.25 DRS 5/100). I found a set at http://www.ecstuning.com for a decent price but wondered how good these where? also I saw some talk about getting the 10mm studs when ordering the 5mm set and wondered how that could be done.

...forget stronger...that 'aint happenin in a 12mm stud....and if ya don't need longer, replacing all 20 studs is kinda a waste.

well I am looking for longer as I do use a 5mm spacer when I autocross and would like to have more than a couple threads for the lugs to grip

yeah i'm also looking for some long studs, but its hard to find just the studs. I was considering buying the H&R 15mm spacers and just using the studs from the kit.

I have seen some old posts about using some nissan studs but can't really verify if they would work and don't want to rip my front end apart and than not be able to put it back together you know. I think what I might do is pick up some stock ones. and than go to the nissan dealer and see what would match up

this was my experience. The kyo-ei ones partway down do not work; the knurled area is just a hair too narrow to seat well in the hub. Damn close though, I tried one and thought it was going to bite but it started to spin when I went to tighten it. Unfortunately I did not even try fitting the Nismo ones since the quality of the metal just looked shady to me. Probably stupid, if they are good enough for the 350Z... fwiw, I picked up an OEM Nissan stud as well; same material as the Nismos. Wish I had tried at least one, but each time you press in a stud it "cuts" new grooves into the hub, swap too many times and there won't be much surface left to mate with. I just replaced mine with new OEM and will wait for a better solution... |

I picked up an OEM 350Z stud just to compare. I think they use it on other cars as well. It is actually a couple mm shorter than the Subaru studs.
You need to get the Nismo ones. 50mm http://performancenissanparts.com/ca...roducts_id=160 40222-RS035 or 60mm http://performancenissanparts.com/ca...roducts_id=161 40222-RS045 OEM Subaru are ~42mm The longer it is the harder it will be to do the rear without removing the hub. |

cool thanks for the info. I guess if they are strong enough for a 350z should be good for my wrx.

well I was finally able to get the wheel studs in. Had checked out the write up on scoobymods.com about the rears and that helped alot. I also installed the koni yellow sport shocks with the Group N strut tops all around while I worked on the studs. Can't wait till our first autox to try it out.
I used a carpentry hammer and an old lug nut to get them all out. I also put some air tool oil on them just to maybe help get them out. results of hammering old lugnut You will need the Abs sensor out and abs ring loose All suds out Rear working them back in Used 2 big nuts and some washers to take up space and used the other lug nut in the top picture to pull them back in. All studs in on front Last edited by cbarth3; 01-30-2007 at 12:13 AM. Reason: updated picture links |

Is there a special tool for inserting the new stud back in the slot? What you did works and I've done it that way several times. However, each time i'm tightening the nut to pull the stud in, it seemed like I could almost shear it off.

no special tool required that I am aware of. just used an impact wrench and just watched the back of the stud as it was going in and stopped when I couldn't fit my finger nail between the stud and the hub. slorice I used 40222-RS035 from
http://performancenissanparts.com/ca...roducts_id=160 which austinpike led me to. |

updated photo links. also helped a friend install 60mm wheel studs and you will have to remove the whole rear parking brake assembly if you decide to go that long. with the 50mm i have you didn't have to remove the assembly
