hurricanes, and the people that stay to ride it out.
WTF are they thinking? seriously. i was just watching some interviews of the Galveston residents. i wont even touch the katrina ordeal. how many of you have rode it out? i lived in MS/LA/AL and there for Ivan and Rita. we always ran to jackson, MS.. or deployed. what are people trying to accomplish by riding it out. especially knowing sometimes weeks ahead of time when and where it will hit.

Depends on your level of preparedness. People in PR have to ride it out, but their houses are built accordingly. In my personal situation. I will board up for a cat 3 or higher and leave for a cat 4 or higher. But I sort of have to ride it out because I work for the FD. So if I'm on duty I have to leave my house and go to the fire station.

Oh, very much so. People in older homes, trailers, ect need to leave. Just putting us in danger going out to help them.

Depends on the shift and how it lines up with the projected landfall. Only 2 of the 3 shifts will be called in, but we will all be on "standby".

I have no sympathy for them. An evacuation was ordered and people decided to ride it out. Now we are spending money on trying to find these lost people. GTFO morons!

down here in miami its a bit easier to ride a hurricane out as most houses are made of steek reinforced concrete. takes a bit more of a pounding then a typical wood house. Also, the infastructure is a bit more robust and ready to handle things. I will stay for anything up to a nasty cat 4 or higher. 3 or lower I will just tape the windows, and hunker down for a few days.

It pretty much is mixed up between a combination of different things:
1. If they've been through enough hurricanes/evacuations you become somewhat resistant to the urge to run away from one over time until another "big one" hits. Unfortunately in this case they may be the big one, no telling really it is all hit or miss. 2. Come hurricane season in Florida every single person out there becomes an amateur meteorologist (or at least they'd like to think they were), and can determine whether this one is dangerous or not because they've "seen it all before" or they "can tell the path its moving". This is a horrible misconception and unfortunately has ended quite a few small town lives. 3. People who have evacuated in the past and were put under extreme financial strain, lost their job due to evacuation, and/or had their house looted/broken into while evacuating are somewhat cautious about how and if they leave. 4. Fear of complete loss of all earthly possessions for those who can not afford to bring it all with them can be a mighty compelling reason for some folks to stay. With the way the insurance is set up for housing in Florida after a large hurricane, bankrupt insurance companies, and a slow clean up process you losing your house/possessions could be a total loss. (Does this help anything? No not at all but it is just how it is.) This all being said, if the eye of the hurricane is heading my way (or somewhat to the east of the eye) I will be heading north, no questions asked. I have lived through tornados, blizzards, floods, but all those can strike suddenly, with a hurricane if you see your ass is grass you better get the hell out. |

my grandma lives on the intercostal in FL, she's rode out every storm, her house is built IIRC 25' above sea level and built to withstand a Cat 5 storm, hell all she does it roll down the shutters).
As far as people riding out the storm, some really have NO clue just how much water is going to come at them. They don't think or know any beter that a 14' storm surge is enough to bury good portions of any coastline. I remember when i was 12 my grandpa was working for Nasa in Houston. We camped out there as a tropical depression hit. I have NEVER seen that much water fall from the sky in 3 hours. It was like standing under a constant waterfall. |

that's exactly it though, some people think they are ready. others KNOW their property can take it.

We get a lot of hurricanes (cyclones) where I live, and I can't recall there ever being evacuations for any of them. We have some pretty strict rules about buildings and generally all newish houses are made of concrete slab/concrete block/timber truss roof.
Must be a lot different over there? |

Only reason this has taken such a front seat is because of New Orleans which is below sea level. |
