^that makes sense. and at this point i'm just curious because my car is running great, but did you have to do anything special to get the cams to log 45*? i'm programmed for 45*, but only go to 40*. and i've also definitely noticed a difference at 40* <3000 rpm. but have you, by chance noticed a difference between 40* and 45*?

Yes, I've noticed a difference betweeen 40 and 45 degrees. A few pages back I have a post when I first started getting AVCS working that shows a chart of boost vs. RPM vs. the old 18G setup on EJ205. With 45 degrees, I'm reliably seeing 14 psi @ 3200 RPM, which is a definite difference from the stock AVCS at 40 degrees.

Ok so the question now is why can the USDM motor only do 30° with the same cam gears? it is not an electronic limit because when we put the 207 into the same car I can run it out to 40°

For example in Amroofs 2005 Forrester I can set 40° of advance in the rom and on the 257 motor it only runs 30° but with the 207 installed it hits 40°. The ECU and all that is the same for both motors so there is something with the 257 that limits it to 30 while the 207 can go further. Is it as simple as the oil pressure is not high enough on the 257 to get more advance?

The reason the JDM cars can have more advance is in the cams and heads. They run lower lift and the big ports bring the flow. The small ports require higher lift to get flow, so there's less cam advance available for a given valve to piston clearance, therefore lower AVCS advance in the USDM programming. 08+ Dual AVCS brings back 40ish degrees of overlap at low RPMs by adjusting the intake forward and the exhaust backwards.

I've programmed and logged 45 degrees, and I've definitely seen a difference from 40 degrees at <3000 RPM as a result.

It can't be oil pressure, but it could be OCVs or position sensors. Aren't both of those different between USDM and JDM?

I think you are right, I believe Amroof uses the JDM OCV with the usdm position sensors. Perhaps the usdm OCV is pressure limited to advance 30 deg while the jdm can push enough pressure for ~45 deg

Amroof- you have both OCVs on hand, want to do a little experiment?

Well, with the EJ207 in the 32-bit cars (EJ255/257), we are actually using the EJ255/257 intake cams and position sensors.

You are correct though, the OCV's are different on the EJ207 vs the EJ255/257. And we are using the EJ207 valves since we are using the EJ207 heads and the EH255/257 ones don't fit properly.

That's a good point. I was thinking about comparing them physically, but on a car would be the easiest approach. The problem is that they use two different connectors I think so swapping them is perhaps a bit tricky without repining the leads (swapping the connectors). I think they are very similar though and it's only a small keying feature difference. If I'm remembering correctly.

Luke. I can swap them on my car but they are is a ****ty position and I can alps re pin them too. It's not that hard. Also I was chilling with Stephen (ia performance) and we were discussing this cam gear ****. He said that the gears are the same him and Dave from ralisport use the usdm one on jdm engines. Anyways. He thinks the extra advance is in the actual cam. But that is kind of off cause I have usdm Sti cams in my car running 40+ degrees of Avcs. So I think it could also be the passages to the ovc valves as well. They might flow better and can get more timing.

has anyone dealt with a restrictor on the stock vf37 on a version 8 as far as tuning? had to add one for open class rules. its a 34mm restrictor at the end of the turbo inlet. Its making the maf scaling a pain says the tuner, just looking on some insight if someone had done one before

its running super rich at the moment, and with the maf unplugged it idles great , maf plugged in it goes all over the place. already switched mafs and o2 sensors to check if they were bad but all is the same

The speed density rom originally came from a v8 group-n car that uses a restrictor. Give the carberry SD a try with the original VE map from the group-n car and it should be really close as it is the exact setup you have.

I got my motor from them and so did kpluiten, both were super clean and they were great to deal with (calls, tracking info, lots of pics). My IACV broke during shipping and they refunded me what I asked to cover it no questions asked.

I would call them up and ask for a quote on a long block If I were in your position then sell off your old one to someone who wants to build. They also occasionally get 207s with bad compression that they usually sell to local shops for rebuilds if you wanted to go down that road.
