Default OT: Tell me what you know about basset hounds (AKA: Paging GeorgeTheFierce)

Yep, thinking about getting one as an apartment dog. Small, doesn't have a yip yap sound, meets most apartment complex's size requirements, and is damn good for picking up ladies.

So what do I need to know about care and whatnot?

I don't know if you could call a basset "little". Full grown basset is a heavy lump of a dog. And bassets may not yip, but they can make just as much noise as any other dog (howling, barking cause he's bored)

Doesn't bark and yelp at anything, even though she'll lighly whine when we leave but not loud enough to bother anyone. I guess every now and then she'll get excited over a rabbit that teases her by sitting outside the window, but other than that I have no complaints.

ok..

the good

Bassetts are lazy and don't take much exercise

they have awesome personalities and get along well with people AND other animals

they have a good long life span (13-15 yrs)

the bad

they stink. no matter what. bassett hounds smell

they are prone to allergies and ear infections (most scent and floppy eared dogs are)

most have a tendacy to howl (or bay...it is afterall what they are bred to do)

they cannot NEVER EVER be left unattended...they wonder after any scent and can't find their way home

back problems are prominant

they don't swim

they don't free breed (you have to hold them together to hump)

they also have a tendancy to be obese (GTF used to weigh 85 lbs)

also....from my apartment hunts Bassetts are not considered small....GTF is 55 lbs right now which is normal

in short GTF has been awesome, though he has cost me thousands in vet bills and $70 a month to feed....and he seems to be borked with the ladies, he attracts only retarded people and kids.

he is my best friend and I cannot imagine what I will do when he goes.

any other questions let me know, I did a ton of research before chosing a breed.

I have a cat, He's MAPCE and has attacked my kid.

Had my ex not stepped in the way, he'd have been shot right then and there. (She wasn't my ex at the time )

I had thought about an English Bulldog, but damned if I'm paying 1500 for a stinkin dog!

With regular bathing, does the smell get cut down alot?

Any behavioral (yea, i ****ed up that word) differences between males and female hounds?

All of my pets have had "real" names. I never understood why people named animals such messed up names.
