Yeah, the OEM battery isn't the greatest with only 390 CCA IIRC. Might not turn the car over in very cold temps. I would definitely suggest replacing it with something better ASAP. I haven't had any problems... yet (knock on wood), but I'll be replacing mine sooner rather than later.

I've just gotten accustom to turning the key to the first notch and letting the lights on the dash cycle on and watching the needles sweep the gauges before turning it over. This way it'll start every time with no issues.

I confess I had been hoping that everyone in this thread was just full of it but unfortunately I had this issue earlier today. Engine just didn't want to start for a few seconds, but it eventually did. Ran normally after that. Subsequent starts have been fine.

Of note is that I have always been following the "turn key part way, let fuel pump run, then start" procedure and I had this issue anyway. So at least in my case, that ritual didn't help.

It was somewhat cold last night (~20 F) but the battery should have been well-charged since I drove the car for about an hour and a half continuously last night.

Apart from a battery problem I guess it could be something with the fuel system or any of a number of things. I am hoping that it does not happen again but you'd better believe that if it does I will be heading straight to the dealership to get it on record if not fixed.

Since several people have experienced this issue, I wouldn't worry about it. It happened to me once in 8k miles. Getting a problem like that "fixed" would be difficult. The dealership can't reproduce the symptom any more consistently than you can. Even if the dealership tried to do something, how would you even know if they were successful?

That's a good point. Troubleshooting it could be impossible unless it happens regularly. Still, if it happens again it might not hurt to have them check a few of the basics (battery, starter, etc.) just in case and get it on record at the same time.

We'll see! Fingers crossed that it was a fluke.

I too have accepted the wait in between ACC and ON. Now i just have the people in my car ask me "why do you do that?" ... smh "dont ask"

It prob doesnt help but it couldnt hurt, and i can tell myself im doing everything i can to prevent the cold-start woes.

I usually find that the wait doesn't matter. I've done the wait for the gages to cycle thing, no change. I've tried waiting for what sounds like the fuel pump priming, but its awful short and quiet, so its hard to tell if I'm waiting long enough- still no change though. I'll be interested to hear from someone who changed the battery. My initial thought was that a 500 CCA battery was small, if we have 390, thats pathetic. I think my lawnmower battery is bigger, lol.

Replaced the 390cca POS with 11miles on the dgm, ditto for the red. In my opinion I would expect the cvt to have more issues with the lower cca as they have more electrical systems than the 5spd. Your car will eventually turn over gonna take a while but it will eventually come to life. As my vehicles trip log generally includes QC, VT, Northern PA, Central NY, and etc a higher cca battery is a necessity. As part of my winter prep I also change the transmission fluid and rear diff to something synthetic. These are of course my own personal choice and may not work for all.
Thanks

Aeoporta,

Good to hear you replaced the battery. Would you mind updating us and letting us know if you still experience problems.

I am sorry other people are experiencing this. I hope everyone is notifying their dealer. Hopefully Subaru can correct this problem.

I took mine to the dealer on Wednesday. Of course they couldn't get it to not start. Checked the computer....no codes, checked the battery - no load charge ok, load - charge ok. At least they have it documented. Since Wed it has started every time. Hopefully, it just needed some break in time! ha ha

Hey, if you're ever traveling through the Rochester, NY area, please let me know. Maybe I'll buy your 390 CCA POS batteries from you, if the price is right. Or did you core them against your new batteries?

To the people who have a hard time starting their car, are any of your cars garaged?

Lately my car is out all the time because of my restoration project taking up one of the bays that I usually park in. But when I first got the car it was inside. Trying to remember if it did it then too... I'm honestly not sure. Its outside at work all day, and then sits outside all night.

he he i won't be near you until january got a road trip through your neck of the woods. I already gave the battery to one of my friends whose car bat died. I am selling the oem tires though I changed those off at 11miles as well.

In response to turn over time. Before summer hit aka its 45F out, car had no problem turning over at 20f and below. As I said the car will take a while to turn over with 390 but it will turn over, I just didn't have the time nor patience to wait for it to start up especially when shes been sitting for a while. My start time in cold weather is the same as in warm weather with the new battery. car has never been garaged.

PM me to let me know how much you'd sell the Yoki tires for.

There was one morning where my car failed to start the first time. I had to crank it again longer until it started kind of hesitantly. A couple other times it started up the first time but sounded like it was hesitating. I always wait for the full sweep of the tach and spedo needles at least. It was cold when it hesitated, but it started right up yesterday morning at -10 degrees, though I did wait about twice as long after putting key in ON.

I park outside when I'm at work and my car is always garaged when I'm home and I've had no issues so far. But then again my car is not a PZEV so maybe that makes a difference?

I run super in all my vehicles no matter what anyone says. I get a little better mileage and I'm sure that it keeps things cleaner. It only costs a coupe of bucks more a tank so cost isn't an issue. There are people out there that will argue with this thinking but who cares.

I have two of the stock Yokohama 205/50R17s sitting in my foyer that my wife would love to get rid of . They only have 41 miles on them.

probably creates more carbon buildup due to the fact it is too high of an octane and all the fuel probably isn't burning

i've had my impreza for about a year now, it happens sporadically maybe once every 2 months on cold weather? Ignored it and so far it seems to happen less frequently, in fact it hasnt happened this winter yet while last one it happened 3 times.

I was just browsing all the TSBs and saw this:

Service Bulletin # 11-124-12

Bulletin Description: This bulletin will provide an inspection and repair procedure for camshaft position-related and/or engine misfire DTCs for 2.0L FB engine-equipped 2012MY or later Impreza and XV Crosstrek models. In addition to a Check Engine light coming on, there may or may not be customer concerns of rough idle, extended cranking or no start. The camshaft position sensor clearance may be out of specification causing these condition(s) and one or more of the DTCs to set.

Information contained in any technical document found on the STIS web site should only be used as reference material for highly trained automotive technicians. Only automotive technicians have the training and the special tools/equipment to repair Subaru vehicles.
