Dealer is pretty clueless on how to adjust the mpg so I'm hoping they can do it. I had to show them the page in the manual on how to do it, but it isn't very descriptive on the process

I can hardly wait. I saw a video on YouTube of a Subie (I think it was an older Impreza) that was actually pushing snow that was deeper than its bumper, like a snow plow.

^^ Understood, but it's still impressive. Do you think a front-wheel drive car with snow tires could do that?

I'm not sure the STI's additional hardware is really of much use in a situation like that. The VDC in our cars should be able to direct the power where it's needed.

Oh, I already know that my wife's impreza with VDC is very good in the snow. But I think I would prefer setting the DCCD into manual lock (aka drive-like-a-tractor mode) if i were really afraid of getting stuck.

This happened to my last WRX sedan and our Hyundai Elantra... all Fall season we stopped parking in our driveway because it just rains acorns constantly. Luckily nothing has happened to the new Subarus.. I will be cutting the trees down in the Spring. |

The the STI's DCCD, you can essentially lock the center diff which gives you better traction in snow. I know the 5-speed '12 Impreza has a 50/50 FR torque distribution, however you are not able to lock it. Plus the front and rear differentials are limited slip - which definitely helps as well.

By the scoop do you mean the triangular piece of plastic that channels the air into the air box? Although it would sound louder, wouldn't air flow be affected?

Right, the STI has fancy differentials front center and rear while '12 Impreza's make due with open front and rear diffs. Last edited by jay25RS; 11-21-2012 at 08:13 AM. Reason: Clarification. |

From www. autos.ca web site:
"As before, Subaru offers two different all-wheel drive systems in the 2012 Impreza: models with the five-speed manual transmission have a viscous-coupling limited-slip centre differential that distributes power 50/50 front to rear. Impreza's with the Lineartronic CVT have an electronically managed continuously variable transfer clutch that distributes power 60/40 front/rear under normal driving conditions, but can transfer more power to the rear wheels under certain circumstances." For those (like me) who don't really know what a limited-slip diff is: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Limited-slip_differential As I'm reading that Wikipedia page, it's reminding me of the movie "My Cousin Vinny". OK, so I was reading the Wikipedia page listed above, and I focused my attention on the limited-slip differential explanation because my Impreza is a 5-speed, so my car has an LSD. Interesting stuff.
Here's the Wiki content I found interesting: "The viscous type is generally simpler because it relies on hydrodynamic friction from fluids with high viscosity. Silicone-based oils are often used. Here, a cylindrical chamber of fluid filled with a stack of perforated discs rotates with the normal motion of the output shafts. The inside surface of the chamber is coupled to one of the driveshafts, and the outside coupled to the differential carrier. Half of the discs are connected to the inner, the other half to the outer, alternating inner/outer in the stack. Differential motion forces the interleaved discs to move through the fluid against each other. In some viscous couplings when speed is maintained the fluid will accumulate heat due to friction. This heat will cause the fluid to expand, and expand the coupler causing the discs to be pulled together resulting in a non-viscous plate to plate friction and a dramatic drop in speed difference. This is known as the hump phenomenon and it allows the side of the coupler to gently lock. In contrast to the mechanical type, the limiting action is much softer and more proportional to the slip, and so is easier to cope with for the average driver." This Impreza is not only my first Subie, but also my first AWD car. My previous car was a VW Golf. I put snow tires on the Golf, and I just put snow tires on the Impreza last weekend. I had good control in the snow with the Golf and its snow tires, but my snow driving is very conservative, with me generally not doing anything that would cause tire slip. Gentle accelerating, gentle decelerating, gentle turns, and so on. I will be curious to see how the Impreza feels in the snow, with snow tires. Should I worry less about slipping tires when I accelerate, knowing that the AWD/limited-slip diff will do its job and figure everything out? Or should I drive the Subie in the same hyper-conservative way when there's snow on the ground? My guess is that I won't need to be as cautious during acceleration, but that I should handle braking and turns with the same caution. Right? |

At low speeds like in the video, VDC can move power anywhere regardless of the initial torque split. If you've seen video of the Impreza or XV crawling around off-road, a wheel in the air will often stop spinning completely as the car moves forward. |

Right. Remember that just because you can get your Impreza moving doesn't mean that it will stop! With that being said, I just ordered a set of General Altimax Arctic snow tires and Sport Edition A7 wheels from Tire Rack for my car.

You probably know this, but the Altimax Arctics are unidirectional, so make sure you mount them on the correct side of the car! |
