so im going to military recruiters next week... need advice
im heading out next week to talk to three different branch recruiters. Army, Navy, and Air Force. I plan on talking to all three and deciding if they have anything to offer that im looking for. I have it set in my mind that when i do go i will only go into a branch if i get what i want. Basically im just assuring myself that i will not give into the recruiters just trying to recruit another warm body. If i do choose to go into a branch it would be for a career/career starter.
I thought about going into the Intel field of the military. Possibly later working for the FBI or CIA if i ever decided to leave the military. What advice can you guys give me before i go?

If you're going to do it, do it right. Be a man and join the Marines.

yeah bring an active duty member with you to hold your hand (a friend, cousin, someone you know).. .the recruiter will be less reluctant to lie to you.... intel jobs have long ass tech schools... like a year and a half in the air force i believe. or a year? can't remember... oh and don't lie about mary-jane.... just tell the truth

My cousin is going the intel route in the Army. He's pretty smart, and he learned fluent Arabic in about a year from their language school out in CA. I would imagine it will be pretty easy for him to find a job in the FBI/CIA once he gets out.

i worked close with the intel guys in 10 SF group in the army in iraq, they had a pretty interesting/fascinating job (to me at least)... made me think about crosstraining into intel, but i think i need something more fast paced. |

If you are set on going into intel then join the Hair Force. It will be the easiest tour. Intel is intel across all branches. They all look good on a resume.
If you want to be challenged join the Marines or the Army. Marines are a underfunded so their equipment can be sometimes crappy.(great training though)The Army gets more money and you can join something like the 82nd airborne and have the time of your life and satisfy all of your adrenaline cravings. even when not deployed. Its all about what you want to do and what you are into. By the way , If you are not comfortable with taking another mans life to safe your own to safe yours or your buddys, then definitely join the Hair Force or the Navy. |

I second that. Likewise, make your own way in the world. Why do you want to join something like the military in this day and age? Not only is a whack job running things, but they pretty much run your life for the next four years. MP likes standing on his own two feet. Join the Air Force if your dead set. A lot more opportunity to learn something that can make you a lot of money after you get out. |

Recruiters don't lie, they just don't tell the whole truth. I know, I used to be a Navy recruiter. Intel is the same in EVERY branch, so choose the one you like. Cliff notes:
AF: Better living conditions, sucky advancement. Navy: Best advancement, way better travel. Army: Though doesn't have a lot of pluses, based on their better advancement than the AF, it would be my second recommendation. Everyone always hypes the AF as being the best. They do have a cush life, but their advancement (ie they amount your paycheck is) sucks balls compared to all the other services. Yes, you have good and bad advancing jobs in every service, but when it comes to averages, the AF always is last and the Navy is generally first with the Army right behind. If you need/want more help, email at [email protected] Ron |

The military has been a great to so many people through out the years. They dont control you. You control you. Even in the Army. Its about doing something for someone who cant do it for themselves. helping others. Placing your life on the back burner so you can ensure that others will have a great and free life. No is as good a time as any. you will never regret it. Maybe while you are serving but it is a feeling of absolute pride that you will take with you to the grave. Even if that grave is in a foreign country. After all the great things that this country has done for the average citizen. 4 yrs of service is just a small payment. Thats might be why he is thinking about it. I know thats why i did , my dad did, and both of my grandfathers did. |

J/K It's just my personal opinion, but I don't want to be told what to do and where to live for four years. I know a lot of guys that I work with that absolutely hate it. It sucks for them, because they are basically locked up for the duration of their tour. That's not to say that there aren't a lot of people who love it though. I work for the Defense Department so I do my part in my own way. I love the fact that I can tell my boss to suck it if things get bad around here by going to get another job. |

Back in '90 I chose the intelligence field as well. I picked Intelligence Analyst and its designator was 96B10 (the b or bravo designator usually means you can end up in a tactical unit). I ended up in infantry commands the first five years, an artillery command for two years before I was in a strategic signal command for my last year in service. I was out in the field alot, but not too many people can say that at 18 they were briefing General officers on intelligence threat!
What Unabombers says about promotions is true but I think that the Army is easier to get promoted. They base promotions off of command recommendations up to E4, then schools and promotion points. If you pick a job that is in high demand, your promotion points will be low. I was an E5 in two years because I was in a job that was high demand. Depending on command needs I knew people that were E5's in 16-18months. The most important thing to remember is that a recruiter's first mission is to get you to join up with their respective service. The alternate objective which is really the most important is to fill the most critically shorthanded jobs first. Intelligence historically has always been shortstaffed, but some positions may not be available. Not because of your qualifications, but because they are at strength. I can tell you that if you go Army and scored 105 or higher ST, 96B will definitely be on the recruiter's short list because they are always shortstaffed. Good luck! |
