a few questions about opensource the stock maf limitations.....
Hey guys....
I have an SR50 turbo and the car has been tuned already and I am about to start tuning on it myself....I am really getting more interested in doing this for my own knowledge.... I have tuned on Motec and Holley Commander 950 systems, but obviously, opensource is much different.... I am wanting to make some changes for the better, not necessarily for a lot more power, but to obtain better fuel mileage, better cold start tuning, and better drivability overall..... More power will just be an extra when it happens..... I already have some experience with using the tactrix and ecuflash and Learning view, and I will be heavily reviewing over the sticky on tuning... I was also wondering if I need to upgrade to a 70mm MAF housing or larger with this turbo? what is the HP level max that I can run with the 65mm aps cold air inlet? Thanks for all the help in advance!!

Easiest way to tell if you need to upgraded is by logging MAF voltage. Stock ECU is set/scaled to around 300g/s @ 4.68V while the MAF is good untill 5V. So you could go back and rescale 350 g/s @ 4.95V. This only works with DBW 32bit ECU cars so I'm not 100% if your 2004 Forester is a 32 bit ECU. For the 16bit (02-05WRX) there is an issue with not being able to physically change the MAF scaling header to go over 300 g/s.

Log MAF voltage, rpm, load, boost, injector duty cylce, total ign timing and post the results from a few WOT pulls. 3rd or 4th gear. This will reveal a lot about yor possible limitations.
Don't expect to be able to do much with MPG. The ECU in these cars when in closed loop keeps the fuel trimed at 14.7:1. Although you can fool the system to run leaner there is no real adjustments. The closed loop is in effect during any cruising or light throttle events under 4500 rpm or so. Sure you can lean up the fuel during open loop (heavy load) events but this won't really save your MPG because the amount of time in open vs closed loop is short in comparison. |

Thanks for the help!!!!
I guess the next question is what all do I need to know/read to do this tuning myself? What is the best logging software/best reflashing software/best tuning software? Thanks! |

All I want to do for now is to replace the computer I have that is tuned now with another computer (I am suspicious that the injector drivers are acting up), and I also am upgrading the injectors very slightly.....
Is there a way I can take my opensource tune and load it into another ECU that has a different number on it? Then, all I would have to do is change the injector latency values for the most part?? |

I made a 73/74mm MAF out of an old powerstroke intercooler pipe and on my ATP 30r- I get 4.88/4.90 volts out of it with the turbo completely maxxed out.
Reads around 4.88-4.9 from 5-8000 rpm and doesn't go any higher so it probably is maxxed out =) The stock size MAF I had on there before wasn't cutting it and it pegged all the time @ 5V even at 4k rpm full boost. Sooo you may need a slightly larger MAF than the 70mm. *shrug* Isaac |

How many grams per second are you getting, AKSubieDubie?
I'm up to about 330 g/s with mine so far, and wondering how that stacks up. I'm using a 3" MAF housing - it's just a 3" tube with a flange for the sensor welded on. I'm using a borrowed MAF scale which worked out very well, and if the top end is as accurate as the low and middle, it'll be good to 440 g/s or so. |
