Not car related, as I work at a Motorcycle dealership, BUT here is my contribution (that actually happened as I was reading this thread lol)

Customer: I am looking for an inline fuel valve for my motorcycle. Do you stock them?
Me: Yes, I currently have a 3/16" and a 5/16" on stock.
Customer: Well I think I have a 1/2" fuel line. Do you have a 5/8" Fuel Valve, that would probably work.
Me: No, I have a 3/16" and a 5/16" on stock. They would be too small if you have a 1/2" fuel line.
Customer: Let me check and I will call you back.
....
5 minutes later, Customer calls back.
Customer: I called about the inline fuel valve. Is that 5/16" fuel valve a measure of the inside diameter of my fuel line?
Me: (shaking my head holding back not to slam my head off the counter) Yes sir, the measurement of the inside where the fuel valve will actually be inserted into.
Customer: oh, okay.... / hangs up

I will have many many more to share, and many will be loads better. I just have think a little to have them come back to me. My life at my shop is honestly a re-enactment of the entire Seinfeld series. Most probably would not believe the daily going-ons...

Just happened today on the phone-

Me: service dept, Ed speaking
cust: I am looking to make an appointment for service.
me: I'm sorry, we are not making appointments at this time. What did you need to be done to the vehicle?
cust: My check engine light is on.
me: we have a lot of those in the shop right now. We are running a few days out on diagnostics right now.
cust: So, should I bring it in next week?
me: I would still need it for a couple of days. We are very busy this time of year. (so far 6 vehicles have rolled in since I started typing this)
cust: So what time do you want me to bring it in so I can get it looked at right away?
me: Like an appointment?
cust: yes
me: like I said before, we don't make appointments.
cust: what should I do?
me: Its up to you.
cust: So you don't take any appointments?
me: FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF

Can't say I blame the guy for being confused. You tell him you're not taking appointments, and you don't give him any alternative ("call back in 3 days and we'll see what we can do", or point him to another shop). If you're not providing anything more than "we're not taking appointments" you're basically telling him to fk off.

It annoys you when you have to help people figure out what part they need? There are cases (perhaps not in your line of work) where the outer diameter measurement is what you need to choose a line.

Wow you guys get the gold star at customer service. Do you actually have techs who can fix cars? Please tell me you're not a Subaru dealer, I'd be totally embarrassed.

Yeah that's a little odd. We charge 1 hour for a CEL diag and 90% of them are diagnosed within that hour. Rarely do we need more than an hour unless it's some crazy electrical issue or multiple codes.

I was at the garage getting my car inspected last week, and overheard this conversation at the desk:

Customer: Did you guys have a chance to look over that Infinity that's parked out front?

Tech: Oh, the guy that brought it in is thinking of buying it so he wanted it looked at.

Customer: Yes, I was also looking at buying it and I saw him take it here, so I wanted to see if you guys had looked it over yet.

Tech: Oh, no we haven't had a chance to bring it in yet.

Customer: Ok, once you have a chance to check it out, could you also call me and tell me what you find?

Tech: Um, the customer that brought it in is paying for us to look at it for him.

Customer: Yes but I'm interested in the same car, and I ALSO want to know if there's anything wrong with it. So could you just call me and tell me what you find too?

But the second person isn't splitting the cost with the person paying for the PPI. If they want the inspection results, then they pay for a PPI and then would letting them know be reasonable.

Should be up to person paying for the ppi.. if he/she wants to share the results then ok. If not then the second person can take the car and get the same thing done, should be quick turn around if they take it to the same spot haha.

It would be unethical for the tech to tell you anything about the car from the inspection. It would be like you asking a doctor about what he found wrong with the guy who just walked out. Exaggerated...Yes, but it's not your car nor did you pay for the service. Once the dealer owns it then that is another story.

Customer had an interesting idea. But still a dumb one. The PPI is done for the paying customer. Besides, if the paying customer likes what he hears from the PPI, the second idiot doesn't get the car anyway.
