With that assumption, one could understandably wonder if the WRX/STI will face the prospect of being dumbed-down, or even eliminated altogether... The WRX's 08->09 leap forward notwithstanding, of course. |

"New car-to-car tests show importance of size and weight in crash outcomes" Reading the article, it seems they are advocating we all drive 75hp, 7000 lb armor-cladded Suburbans. Flies in the face of the whole active/passive safety thing (which they try to rebuke using insurance stats later in the article). Between these IIHS jerk-offs and the environmental regulators, I don't know how the heck you guys would get anything approved for sale over here. Do they forget that the car companies are trying to run a business? Let's see some creativity out of you car manufacturers - how about some sanctioned/warrantied aftermarket options for us consumers? Figure out the legalese to get it separated cleanly from the manufacturing and sales arm (I'm assuming that's what keeps SPT so gimped) and let us the consumer deal with the EPA and IIHS - they can't get all of us! /rant //finishes beer |

^^I'm not sure what you are ranting about. IIHS is right; even assuming equal safety features, larger cars are safer than smaller ones. The push to improve fuel economy costs lives:

I agree, yes.. but the IIHS agenda is to save the insurance companies money.. and that means fewer and less damaging accidents.. which of course is a good thing.. but to do it, they are advocating, larger, slower vehicles. "IIHS criticized the current structure of fuel economy standards for cars because "the target of 27.5 miles per gallon is applied to an automaker's whole fleet, no matter the mix of cars an individual automaker sells." Such an approach, IIHS argued, "encourages manufacturers to sell more smaller, lighter cars to offset the fuel consumed by their bigger, heavier models. Sometimes automakers even sell the smaller -- and less safe -- cars at a loss to ensure compliance with fleetwide requirements." In response, the Obama administration announced it is boosting the fuel economy standard for cars, beginning with 2011 models, and instituting a size-based system to set fuel economy targets like the one already in effect for SUVs, pickups and vans. "This system will mandate lower fuel consumption as cars get smaller and lighter, thus removing the incentive for automakers to downsize their lightest vehicles to comply. It also could mean that technology currently used to enhance horsepower would go instead to reduce gas consumption -- a direct safety benefit because less powerful cars have lower crash rates," IIHS said. In government circles- lobbying etc, you say things subtly. It's there. And so of course is the castigation of small cars. IIHS would have us driving 70hp tanks limited to 55 mph. In general, the IIHS benefits consumers.. so we aren't on a crusade against them by any means...but it's not their primary objective. |
