First, a tad bit of back plot.... Bought an 03' bugeye wrx last winter (much better for snow than my FC Rx7, go figure) that had been tastefully modified with nothing but some semi-functional gauges and handling mods. Tastefully being used lightly, the car had been painted Black over the factory WR Blue (TEARS! Many, Many tears.). Oh, and it has blue flames. And still does, I know, I know. It's on the list. So about two months ago at a gas station:

Man in large truck: That an Sti or a WRX? (which was cool, mad street cred for wrx yo lol)
Me: Just a WRX. Still goes like stink, and I still love it just as much
Man in truck: Nice. I like that flames by the way, it's crazy I used to have an eclipse with almost the same paint job...
Me: Oh, Thanks... (I say politely, slowly watching my happiness draw farther and farther away as I realize I was just inducted into the Official Society for Ricers

Took the 'Ru in for a new battery today. The guy at the shop asked how many miles are on it, I told him 155k. He goes "Oh, so basically brand new for a Subaru." I got a good chuckle out of that.

I always get asked by honda drivers "what exhaust is that? I want the rumble sound".

To which i reply "Subaru"

I get a very confused look in return.

GF(all the time): your car is lame...You give your car more attention than me...You spend more money on that thing than me... blah blah blah... etc... Etc...

Me(joking): Sold the Subaru. Bought a truck.

GF(panicked): you did what!? You better not have sold the Subaru! If you did we are going to have a talk mister!

Me: I thought you hated my car

GF: shhhh

She hasn't complained about car since haha. But my DH bike is another story

Just got back in the Subaru game with a 15 Legacy, so I thought I would hare my past WRX experience.

had an 04 WRB WRX, and I took it to Advanced Auto at the end of fall to get a new Battery for Winter.

I go inside get the Associate, he grabs the battery and his little cart and we go out to install the battery (surprisingly with no issues).

Once the battery was installed, and the associate had me start my car, this conversation ensued.

Me: fired right up, that is a good sign.
Ass.: You should probably get your engine looked at, sounds like it is misfiring..
Me: (blank stare)...it is supposed to sound like that
Ass.: It clearly sounds like it has a misfire, or at least an exhaust leak somewhere
Me: That is the boxer rumble of a WRX. It has Unequal length Headers
Ass.: (blank Stare) then rolls his cart away.

I had a chuckle once I got in my car and left, but it sure makes me weary to go anymore for parts/service etc.

Person "Ah, I love that car! Is it your boyfriends?"
Me "No, it's definitely mine.. but thank you."

Every time.

Looks at me with disgust, and says: "you know that wing doesn't do anything at any speeds that car is capable of". (WRB 04 STi) I just smiled.

I also get most " nice car" compliments from 5-12 year old boys. It makes me question my maturity (I'm 37)

First time I called an Autozone looking to replace some parts they asked me what kind of car it was, I answered it was a 2002 Subaru Impreza Wagon. They asked what engine size was in it, I said 2.0 turbo...and was immediately insulted for being so stupid to think that my Impreza wagon was a turbo. The person on the phone was very adamant that they did not make a WRX wagon, and that it was a stupid idea anyways. Even the manager would not believe me that I had a WRX Wagon, this even after giving them the entire VIN number. So from now on I get all my parts at dealers. I gave up on all parts retailers after that.

Friend of mine's 3yo son is in love with my car (STM 2.5rs coupe on orange BBS Sti wheels). He LOVES drifting and I took him some old diecast cars I had collecting dust on my shelf. When I pulled in his drive way he's playing in the yard and points at my car saying "Cool Car Daddy, there's a cool car! Daddy come see!" made my day right there. Whenever my buddy comes to get parts from me at work his son has to come too to see if "the cool car" is there. I don't get it at all because his dad drives a ls3 swapped bugeye WRX with a giant wing for drifting.

Don't give up on all of them. There is the occasional diamond in the rough at the non dealers. Like me, over at Oreilly.
