My wife has owner nothing bu but Fords for over 20 years, and never had a single issue with a dealership questioning any warranty repair. I'm the only person in the family to drive imports, and no one in my family has ever had one issue with a Ford dealership questioning a warranty repair. I'm talking about for over 2 decades of history. Hell, Subaru can't even get something as simple as paint correct. Its engines are basically disposable because of the stock tune and pistons. Even well known NASIOC supporters will tell you to get your brand new car retuned to help diminish the odds of breaking pistons from just ordinary daily driving activities. But doing so, ironically, voids your warranty... As I said, I'm not a Mustang fan, but at least their motors aren't disposable, and their trannys can support some huge numbers (except the ones with the flaw that has now been corrected). |

Scramjett, you said it, lots of people own mustangs. That nameplate has diluted it self to rental car or a shelby $60.000 + glorified rental car. Even at that price you don't even get folding side view mirrors. In my opinion, the WRX & STI can't be beat easily at their price point. However, My loyalty IS fading toward the brand I had to bring my car to a dealer in another state 3 hours away because the dealers in my state fight every warranty claim with the abuse and mod BS. Any new car shouldn't be falling apart. I opened this thread in disbelief that my never abused car had a engine failure. And since many members have told me ringlands and pistons, etc. My failure was neither , it was a manufacturing and assembly issue. It appears more engineering goes into the ad campaign for the WRX & STI than the car itself. They fooled me. Now just knowing my car would greatly benefit from a tune makes me furious. I thought Subaru would do better than that. My mistake. The dealer called and they said its ready to blow, I mean go. I get it back Friday.

Just curious, what mods were on your car when the engined popped? I've read that the Subaru MAFs are so sensitve that even removing the stock air box resonator causes the engine to run lean...that and cylinder #4 (which usually is the first to go) runs extra timing as "safety knock" because it's closest to the knock sensor...how crazy is that? |

Yes the car is all stock . The local dealers in my past Subaru ownership made every thing difficult when it came to warranty work. Driving 3 hours away to buy a car and have it serviced seems crazy. But its worth every mile. My local dealers seldom ever stock STI's. Forget even having a pearl white limited on the lot.

Okay you Mustang fanatics. I will say something nice about Mustangs. Since the STI's introduction to the us Market in late 03 , lets face it the engine and transmission hasn't really improved much. In fact some may say it has actually become worse. The suspension has FINALLY improved by 2011 and finally looks better in 2011 as well in my opinion . In that same amount of time Ford has improved the Mustang drastically. Current model mustangs have a impressive interior from ample and bright customizable illumination, comfy seats. And a audio system that makes the Premium Audio in my STI sound like head phones. Not to mention the overall interior treatment in a Mustang makes a current model STI look 5 years old . So there... If I wanted a mustang I would buy one and talk about it on a Mustang Forum. , .. comparing cars is fun. But finding Mustang fans may be hard on a Subaru Forum. ?

I could get a new mustang GT w/ track pack (brembos and other track related goodies) and Recaro seats (stock, 1700$ option) for close to the same price as a base model STi. I love the STi, but that really is a bargain in terms of performance. I bet it would be more reliable as well but I could be wrong.

I'll ask the most pertinent question ever... Why are we still discussing a damn Mustang in this guys blown motor thread?
Lets get back on topic. |

bringing it back to topic.
I had a dyno stg1 tune put on my 2011 Sti sedan yesterday. I had been seeing the intermittent check engine lights, but was never able to capture a code or data on it but I knew of these run lean issues. K&N panel filter and grimmspeed solonoid Gains are decent and the delivery is a bit smoother and it picked up a few revs near the top. but look at the air/fuel graph, so glad to have that leveled out. DSG hadn't seen any failures for a stock tuned 10/11 STi so far. But geez how did they leave the factory mapped like that, the 12' they saw at DSG did not have the same A/F issues as the 10/11' so at least Subaru fixed it going forward. ^ Shows perfectly why the stock tune is dangerous. I wish I could copy/paste that into all the threads where people say "There's nothing wrong with the stock tune. I doubt Subaru would put a dangerous tune on their cars."

The bad A/F directly related to an A/F correction table that is all ZERO's in the 10/11' STi.. step one to fix the tune is copy/paste that table from a 09 STi. 12's have it populated again.
I don't know if it was for economy.. or for a punchier driving feeling.. but it's just not responsible to put the cars out there like that. I daily drive mine so a majority of the use it saw was dead in the trouble spot. |

That '12 graph is running a 14:1 ratio until 4,200rpm and doesn't drop to 11:1 until 4,900rpm. That doesn't seem healthy to me.

When I had my 06 WRX the graph looked exactly the same - I am pretty sure they have been running this type of tune for a long time now.
