Because the paint chips easily on many Subarus, and this isn't a new problem. All paint is not created equal and Subaru uses paint on the fragile end of the scale.

Is there really any standard auto paint that isn't prone to rock chip damage? When a sharp-edged piece of gravel comes flying from a truck and hits your car at a relative speed of 25 mph or more I don't think any paint is going to hold up

The paint on Subarus does look a bit thin. I've seen some cars where it looks like it has a thick clear coat, and it looks nice too.

I'm not that concerned with the paint, I've seen many older rusted subaru's, but no worse than other older cars on the road -- they are still being driven around and that means a lot for any 20 year old + cars in the Northeast.
Of course if you live in the south you are used to seeing some really classic cars still on the road--VW beetles etc, not as many up north where they have rusted to nothing. |

My Impreza has 10K on the clock and is already showing some notable chips. It isn't terrible though, so I am not worried about it. In a few years I will bring the car to a reconditioning shop and have them fix the front paint. |

Aside from the Subaru OEM Oil Filter what are the best oil filters out there compatible for the 2012 Subaru Impreza? "Top name brands" I guess you can say.

Purolator's Pure One line is pretty widely-accepted as a great one to use. L14460 is the model for just about every Subaru 4-cylinder, and L14459 fits the H-6.

Is that widely accepter for the older EJ 2.5 engines? Or widely accepted for the new FB2x engines? the FB2x engines use different spring rates compared to the older EJ25.

So I just called the local shop where I got a coupon for 3 free oil changes and they provided me what they use for Subaru's. Oil: Kendall Full Synthetic but switching to Valvoline soon. Filter: Mobile 1 full guard. Does this sound good or should I provide my own stuff during my oil change? |

1) until someone does enough research to prove that other filters have the same bypass as the OEM filters that are used on the new Impreza engine I will use OEM oil filters. They are not much more expensive than the ones you are going to buy at Autozone or Walmart (2-3 dollars more ?). Compared to the price of synthetic oil vs regular it is a not much money to know you have the correct filter.
2) like many retailers who may not carry it at all or only have it in quarts, quick change oil shops may not even have 0w-20 in stock, so make sure you verify if you are going to a quick lube that they are using the right weight oil. The new engine specifies 0w-20 (only available as synthetic). I would never assume that someone else who changes your oil gives two "craps" about your car or cares if the warranty specifies a certain grade. I would assume that they are going to choose whatever oil fill wand is closest to them unless otherwise directed (so you are just as likely to get the more commonly available non-synthetic 5w-40 as the correct oil, no matter what the receipt they give you shows). I would expect the dealer to use the correct oil, as many new Subaru engines require it so they definately know what the engine requires. But they also don't mind charging you more for a synthetic oil service, so there's that. Kinda makes you want to do it yourself (unless you have a good dealer or a service contract with your dealer). For those of you who have a fumoto installed, do you need to jack up your car to do an oil change? (Trying to do it with the least amount of work possible) lol

I haven't done it yet since installing the fumoto, but I have a sport like you and I don't think it will need to be jacked up to fit a pan under it or open the valve (I got the valve with the nipple, so hook up the hose and open the valve=simple). at most I will lift one side briefly.

These people pull the filters apart and examine the contents making comments. Really good way to see what you are buying.

^^ I think I remember seeing that, or something like it. There's a good thread on here as well, with cross-sectional photos of a few dissected filters.
The Purolator Pure One filters do have similar features to the OEMs, which is why I like them. But I've bought OEMs too, yes price is about the same. I'm not sure if the standard Purolator is worse, really - it's just missing the grippy surface. |

back to your question: if there is enough clearance for a wrench, there should be plenty for the fumoto... (this car is low, but it has better clearance than my wife's prius which requires me to drop the drain plug into the drain pan because with both in place, i can barely get my hand in between the plug and the pan to loosen the former) |

Not necessarily saying you got ripped because I live in so cal and things could be way different out here. But I paid $100 for full level 3 tint and the guys got it done in an hour. It looks great and they used good quality film.
Just throwing my experience out there. |

Here's a strange one that i may need to photograph and post a picture of at some point:
does anyone (who hasn't tinted their windows) notice a vertical streaking pattern on their rear hatchback glass? it doesn't affect the clarity of the glass looking through it while driving but from the outside, it has this strange vertical banding...maybe each band is about 1" wide. |

are you looking at it with polarized sunglasses on? Nice hatch pattern when you do that.

if you only see it when wearing glasses rotate the glasses and look through them with the frames vertical (or just tilt your head sideways), instead of horizontal, as this will change the polarization.
