I do restorations and world class paint jobs, suby's are my favorite. check me out.
Shop Website
http://excellencepaint.com/ Hello all. My name is Rick, some in the MAIC forum know me from the shop I work at or just from normal goings about in the city we are in. I wanted to make this thread as it will HOPEFULLY be the last that I make involving a subaru as I hope to keep this car and pass it on to my son in 20 years. I have owned 3 other subarus, I had tore those down and repainted them as well, all I have had to sell for one reason or another but being that I am now 31 and somewhat well established I am hoping to not have to lose this one. I work part time at a well known paint shop and fortunately have the facilities, product and skill at my disposal to refinish all of my cars. This is my story, it will be ongoing and updated when I get things done. I work full time in the FD and part time in the paint shop, have a 2 year old son and a wife that works full time so getting my own stuff done with "spare" time can be quite challenging. It might take me a while, but it will get done. I assure you. Awesome story short. I was looking to purchase another suby cause I desperately missed my previous bugeye that I sold for reasons I still have not fully come to understand. I repainted it and put alot of time into it and missed the heck out of it. I also previously owned another 05 sti that I was totally heartbroken to get rid of, but had too since my son was on the way to this world and I needed to free of some cash to finish my kitchen remodel before his birth. I was scrolling through the forums one day just browsing and spotted this one in early november of 2012. I knew the guy selling it, had painted some stuff for him over the past few years. In 2011 I made an agreement with the wife that if I went all of 2012 without a nice car and just drove my beater 91 civic that when the clock struck 2013 I could get any car I wanted. I talked to her about this one in november, but she stood firm and said negative, not till 2013. I was bummed as I was certain it would be gone by then. Being the awesome lady that she is, she organized a plan with a friend of mine and purchased it without me knowing to be presented to me on xmas day. She asked me to take out the trash, and it was in the driveway. I freaked of course. She got me real drunk xmas eve so that I didn't hear it pull in the driveway in the middle of the nite. I walked out to this. After the initial enjoyment and shock. I was able to spend some time with the car and wash it, much to my disappointment the body and paint of the car were not in the greatest shape. Lots of rock chips, some dents and scratches. Being the person I am, real picky when it comes to paint. I have decided to just go ahead and tear it down, and respray the entire thing to make it as clean as possible. Here are some of the things that made me decide to go ahead and just respray it. I was on and off with the wingless trunk/rs hood. Although it did look pretty good, I decided to go ahead and trade the trunk for a stock sti trunk, also traded the hood plus cash for a stock sti hood. I know some of you will probably burn me for doing that, but an sti without the scoop and wing is just not cutting it for me ha. The hood needs some work but im doing the whole car anyway so it was of little consequence

At this moment in time. I have the car tore down, with all the loose pieces at the shop awaiting some work. I have them all stripped down awaiting primer and the car in the garage. Once I have all the loose parts primed I will bring the car to the shop to start the bodywork and priming.
During the tear down my fender flare broke....sad face. Here is how the car sits as of now. Decided to go ahead and iron-x the car before I start the bodywork to make sure I got rid of anything that might cause any sort of problem later on under the new paint. Hood that I traded for had lots of rock chips and some previous bodywork already done to it which needed fixing. Being that sti hoods are aluminum have to be real careful with these or they'll be worse off than before fixing. Front bumper, rear bumper, hood, scoop, front lip, fog covers, splitter and aeroguards sanded and ready for primer. More to come in the next few weeks. As I say.. "If you can't see an STi from space (i.e. Wing and hood scoop) then its not an STi. I loved my '05 CGM STi. I wish I never sold it either.

Yes sirs, wife is definitely badass. She drives a nice tsx that I maintain and keep super clean. I made her drive my civic for 1 day in december and she came in the house and said " I want my car back", I just laughed and she finally realized that a car, is not just a car, and she's not even the car person of the family. She finally realized what kind of withdrawls I was going through.

This car will basically be a weekender once I finish it, the gas mileage of the civic is just unbeatable and driving the sti everyday would be a wallet buster. Once its finished ill drive it once or twice a week and take it to car meets and such. |

Keep up the good work, it's looking great already!! Those handles seemed to have polished up well. What grit sandpapers have you used to prep the car thus far? Any body filler required?

I have not started prepping the car yet. Im out of commission this week so the weekend ill just be relaxing. I stripped the bumpers, splitters, fog covers, aeroguardsand hood with 180 in preperation for primer. Once they are primed ill prep them with 500 on a soft pad d/a. The entire car will be getting a coat of sealer before any basecoat and sealer covers 500 perfectly.
first I wilI be getting the paintless dent guy to remove any dents to minimize any body work that is needed. Then I will be blocking the car with 400 to make sure i dont miss any spots that need some attention. Once that is done ill repair what needs it,prime it and then guide coat it followed by more blocking to make sure everything is looking good. Than follow with 500 on the soft pad d/a followed by 600 on the softpad just to make sure. Its not really neccessary cause 500 is plenty high of a grit for sealer to be sprayed over and adequately cover any prep scratches. I just like to be sure. Then she'll be ready for paint. |

little more progress today.
looks like im going to have to drill out the passenger side mirror. Ive broken 3 impact screwdriver bits trying to get this thing out. The driver side came out fine but there are 2screws stuck in this passenger side mirror that have been a nightmare. Drilling time. luckily I was able to get one of the hardest parts done today, getting these roof rails off without breaking them or all of the clips. Glad thats done. weatherstripping off as well. I think the fenders are coming off next and then itll be time to start the bodywork. Last edited by I WANT AN STI; 03-17-2013 at 03:17 PM. |

Nice progress. Trim can be a bitch sometimes lol so what are your steps on bodywork?
Also do you spray the car yourself? |
