Timing belt snapped
My timing belt went on my car today. Just driving down the road at 80km/h (50mph) and thunk!
History... engine is a 99 JDM WRX that was installed when my original engine spun a bearing. I swapped the timing belt/pulleys/tensioner over to replacement engine when I did the swap since I knew the history of the belts/etc. Belt had 90K km (not miles) on it when it went. It was not an OEM belt. The idlers/etc are spinning freely, so I think it's a belt failure. No wear or gouge marks on the belt. It broke in two places. I'm thinking the original spot, and then after it got wrapped around the crank pulley and cracked the timing belt cover. Is it worthwhile opening up the engine at all? Or just look for another replacement. At least with my previous swap I could re-coup some of the cash by selling my old heads. I guess everything is crap on this engine? Heads crap due to bent valves? Rods crap due to trying to compress with closed valves, or it that only a problem if there is detonation? Really just looking for what my next steps should be (besides pushing this this off a cliff). Thanks. |

the rods and everything SHOULD be okay. most likely valves were bent. if u wanted a confirmation just put another timing belt on and do a leak down test. but im sure a good amount of the valves got bent.
pull the motor and have a machine shop take a look at it and see if the heads are okay. if they are just do a valve job or u could get them ported and upgrade the valve train. |
