So, after a year and 1 month, this is how mine look. Top one is from September 2011, bottom one from October 2012. They look a bit faded, but not like some I've seen in the same time. I think they need a polish...

i'll have to re-read this thread for long time care to try and minimize fading. at this point, i think a light sand and additional coat of clear would add protection for winter.

NOTICE: there are cracks on this lens. not sure how or why... no water so it's good.

I just did mine with nightshades red and rustoleum clear coat and I'm happy with the way they turned out, I'll try to remember to post up after some time with my results on durability.

As a side note I would like to say that based on my experience doing this I DO NOT recommend Krylon stained glass. I painted them with that twice this week and ended up having to take it all off with paint thinner because both times I tried to clear coat them they had some crazy reaction with the clear coat and bubbled up. They had plenty of time to dry before I did this, once I let them dry over night but it made no difference. I tried 3 different types of clear and got the same result with all of them, one was even the exact kind that the op used. I tried using extremely thin coats and that didn't seem to help. I don't consider myself a pro painter but I have done plenty of painting projects like this and I always take my time and I've had great results but for some reason the Krylon just wouldn't work for me. I see lots of other people have used it and had not problems so I don't want to say that it IS bad, just in my experience it sucked.

I agree. I wish i could have NOT needed my car for a week to do this better.

I had bubbling issues with clear as well. While its easy to just slap the tail light assy's back on and wait, i noticed the bolts and screws will strip if you arent paying attention as well.

Wich is good, the way they should work: stripped nut, bolt or screw BEFORE stripping the hole for the outter tails or the studs on the inner tails.

I noticed one of my outter tail bolts was shiney. I backed it out and it went in just fine.

I use either a 1/4" drive ratched or a screw driver to ensure i dont go to town and strip something. That would suck.

Did you read the can instructions? I think Krylon paints require a full 7 day curing period before any other paint can be applied over it.

whats the verdict on better reduced fading VHT nightshades or Duplicolor Metalcast red?

I see people post up after 1 year pics but they never say what paint/Clear they used.

Go to page 36 to get my specs, then look at the comparison on the first post of this page.

I gave it another polish after posting that last pic and it came back to life. No pics yet though...

VHT is meant for tails, I've never heard of their black fading so I don't see why red would be different. I think they also tell you to use clear lacquer rather than normal clear coat, that may have something to do with it as well, you have to be careful though, I made mine too dark, they need some wet sanding. No opinion on duplicolor but defiantly don't use the krylon stained glass, that fades badly pretty fast

Yes, VHT and Krylon Fuzion clear. I took some pics after the polish but never posted them. I'll try to upload them when I get home from work.

I used Duplicolor Metalcast and they started to fade on the upper parts after about a year. I've redone them with VHT so we'll see how that goes.

I have one question guys, when you mask off the center reverse light area and spray the red around the outside..... Are you leaving the center masked off and only spraying clear over the red or have you guys been clearing the entire light? I'm looking for the red nightshades so I can do this next weekend

In my case, I removed the masking and cleared the whole thing. I then sanded the whole thing with 1500 grit to even the gap between coats. I put about 5 coats of clear to make enough build-up for sanding.

Has anyone try spraying without taking the lights out? You can just cover the entire back and spray at the tail lights, right? I know it's more prep work but I think it's much faster than taking and putting the lights. Any Con on this methods?

I would unmask and clear the whole thing. If not you will have clear/paint lines, and it will make it easier to chip and not as smooth.

It will be harder to paint, you will really to have to watch for overspray, it will be more likely to run and overall not turn out as good.
Why do it? It will take you more time to mask off all around the lights than it would take to just take out the few bolts and pull them.
Plus like I said above, it will be a lot harder to get the same quality paint job.

I picked up a can of red VHT nite shades today and before i paint my tails i have a few questions.

1. Can you use any brand of clear coat after the paint? because in the past ive had better experience using the same brand clear coat as the spray paint, but vht doesnt make a clear coat.

2. How many coats of clear coat over the nite shades? i know the OP said 1 coat but that was over the stained glass paint.

3. Is sanding the tail lights before the nightshades and before the clear coat necessary?

thankss

vht on the can says to use clear lacquer not just clear paint.

you can use as many coats as you want to achieve the desired darkness...i used a bit too much so I need to redo them

you don't need to sand the lights, just clean them. after the nightshades you may need to wet sand unless you put it on totally even...mine are a bit bumpy and need to be redone or at least sanded down and recleared

this is how mine look with probably about 4 coats..too many IMO I would do 2 - 3

Just got one more question before i do this on friday. Why does everyone sand do a 2000 grit wet sand on the lights before waxing? And is waxing necessary and can it be waxed with out sanding? i am just afraid i will get a dull, hazy look if i sand them
