Creaks and Rattles
I have a 2013 STi sedan with 1050 miles on it, and it's beginning to creak and rattle over every friggin' bump! It's like the buzz from a speaker or a mosquito in your ear! Does anyone else experience any of this. It originates in the rear of the car, and sounds like plastic vibrating against metal. The sound occurs during all RPM ranges usually from gears 1-4
Also, Getting out of First and Second gear tend to be pretty loud when under 1900 RPM, but I hear this is usual for the STi transmission. I have an appointment set up for tomorrow. I want this taken care of and hopefully not blown over and being told "it will go away." Any help would be great thanks.

If its the noise i think your talking about from 1-4 gear i believe its because of your clutch its still new so try giving slightly more gas and a little clutchslip and dont completely release the clutch until slightly higher RPM i had a similar problem.

I've noticed the child safety anchor covers are pretty loose and flap when I have all the windows rolled down. When they're rolled up, I can hear at least one of them vibrating. I haven't had a chance to secure them yet to confirm this is the buzz I'm hearing, but I'm pretty sure it is. I'd check that out on yours and see if that might be the cause.
Also, I've noticed sometimes the rear seat belts can vibrate causing noise. I don't seem to get that all the time, though. On my old 2010 WRX I had a creak coming from the air vents on the dash that I never could resolve, luckily this hasn't come up yet on my STI (yet). |

Welcome to owning a Subaru! There's a rattle fixing thread on here. You will never get rid of all of them. Dealer isn't going to do **** about it either.

Ronen, all I can tell you is, if you're bothered by buzzing/creaking noises now, don't even think about installing an aftermarket exhaust on your car. I have what is considered a quiet exhaust (Invidia Q300) on my sedan and I hear all sorts of buzzing rattling noises throughout the cabin at various rpm. Doesn't bother me a bit because I knew going in the WRX/STI wasn't supposed to be Lexus quiet. Look around you as you sit in the driver's seat. You're surrounded by cheap plastic. That plastic butts up against cold hard...metallic substances. It's going to rattle and buzz. Welcome to Subaru ownership.

Seriously, this. There's the rattle thread that you can take a look at for rattle fixes, but the dealer will rarely fix it. "Unable to replicate" is a common phrase you'll hear if you try to get the dealer to fix a rattle. Something you have to get used to or put in a lot of effort to find the cause yourself.

My steering column cover does this. Drove me nuts for months. One day it was doing it, I put my hand on the cover, and it was quiet.
I know people that work as NVH engineers that spend their careers looking for BSR (Buzz, Squeak, Rattle). So, this is a big problem. You really need to have a second person move around the cabin while you are driving looking for these noises. This is dangerous, so do it at your own risk. |

Yeah it's part of the ownership experience. Less than a week on my 2013 STI Sedan and I count at least three rattles. Two from the dash and one from the rear decklid. I must say my 2008 MR was for the most part rattle free for a couple of years and the 2012 Mustang also rattle free. I can't complain too much though as I had driven in other GR WRX's that rattled like crazy and knew what I was getting into. It is however an area that Subaru really needs to improve on as the competition is better in this regard.

If you're halfway mechanically inclined, fixing rattles yourself is very easy. the hardest part is first finding the source.

Identified problem spots in the GD cars I've owned (these make the list because they're louder or more annoying than the underlying suspension chatter): a) steering rack cover, as mentioned b) windshield vent plastic (usually on either corner) c) mirror gap whistle d) hatch hinge sounds (pops and creaks) e) seat belt whine f) ... many more interior squeaks and taps unidentified (also forgotten) Rattles, squeaks, and buzzes abound in each and every Subaru around |

It's amazing to me that it's 2012 and with all this technology Subaru cannot build a car that is tight enough to not rattle. If anything it's getting worse with time.

Mine rattles, but it seems like it's worse lately because it's getting colder so the hard plastic is even harder...
It sounds it's the rear deck noise you're hearing, I've seen people get their dealer to check it out. |

I just live with them. My old 98 civic didn't make a sound, and this WRX creeks and rattles from everywhere. But it doesn't bother me, its a fun car. I read about most of these issues before I purchased it so I'm not surprised . Most of my squeaks are coming from the seats, read something about a fix, but I'm pretty busy atm to care. It was fairly quiet during the summer, the cold has definitely increased the amount of cabin noise.

The noise has gone away after I unfolded the seats, which may of not been secure from previous, and folded them back up and reengaged the child belt anchors. So I just canceled the appt., and didn't have to miss work. Thanks guys! |
