I believe it has been found that not using the 'mini-scoop' at all and just plugging that hole with the Subaru plug is better than running the 'mini-scoop'.

Both from a pressure and temperature standpoint. I don't recall exactly, but I'm sure it was here in NASIOC. I remember seeing reasonably detailed data somewhere.

Rallitek carries it, but they want $45 for it. Seems like a bit much to me.

http://www.rallitek.com/

EDIT - looks like these guys have it also for $45...

I would like to hear more about this. I am going to drop the stock silencer, and keep the stock airbox, but I was considering using 3" black pvc piping to re-attach the 'mini-scoop' to the stock airbox.... Is it actually better to just clean up the hole left in the stock airbox?

The data that I've seen showed the stock intake having slightly better airflow at high speeds/rpms, while an intake with removed silencer had quicker turbo spoolup. It's hard to conceive of how the silencer would improve high-speed airflow, so some people conjecture that the cold-air scoop is what improves high-speed breathing. By using the silencer-delete elbow (I have one), one may get advantages at both low speeds and high, though this is far from proven.

At any rate, the scoop/elbow is not worse than feeding the airbox from the fender (shown in some measurements connecting the scoop to the airbox with dryer hose), and is quieter if that appeals to you. The elbow configuration is also more stealth when you need to get dealer service done.
