I get blamed constantly for being a dong on these forums, so I'm not trying to be one, but READ my son.....directly from the first post:
Are there any other important things to remember when replacing the clutch myself? Yes, unless using a new flywheel, the old flywheel must be resurfaced on a blanchard grinder or by a professional shop who uses that or other specific type of machinery for resurfacing. DO NOT use emery cloth, a Dremel tool, a regular lathe, or other shortcut. While flywheels work similar in fashion to brake rotors, you cannot get away with the unusual techniques some people use with brake rotors during a brake pad change. My post is fact and anyone that says you can't do it is ignorant as to how to do it.

i own a 2002 subaru wrx 5 sp. manual.i recently blew my 1rst gear.i took it to a replicable place for rebuild and it was suggested i get lagacy gt gear set. ok i went with it.got the trans back installed it in my car,ran absolutely great for one day then all of a sudden the next day my check engine light came on,it back fired and my speedometer quit working.
i called the place they said that subaru changed their speedo gear. it makes the speedometer work and controls everything hence why it backfired and ran like crap. i was told to bring them my car they'll tear the trans out ,tear it apart and put the new speedo gear in it. sounds like a cool deal. saved me on labor . well i got the car back and now im hearing a slight grinding noise coming from the transmission when i let off the throttle or downshifting, coming to a red light ,etc. and it gets quieter when i push the clutch in. i called them, they said its my clutch because of the lightweight flywheel, now ive had this in my car before on the old transmission and never heard any vibrations or grinding of anything. im almost certain its not the throw out bearing, its a different type of noise AND besides the clutch and stuff is brand new, plus i had ACT resurface the flywheel prior to replacing the clutch and transmission. its almost sounding like something inside isnt meshing very well, has anyone else had this sort of trouble with replaced gear sets of any sort? |

no.
but just about everyone with a LW fly has heard increased deceleration noise. |

About the flywheel FAQ and the link to calculate the equivalent weight savings, from the flywheel weight reduction:
In the Excel spreadsheet there is a formula error At line I92, change the formula to read =INT(I91) The equivalent final drive didn't make sense, for aftermarket wheel sizes.. With the change, the equivalent weight savings are even bigger. |

I just had an Exedy stage 2 clutch and a LW flywheel installed in my car. When I let off the throttle, I hear the same sort of grinding noise. Is this normal, or is it possible that something is wrong? I'm concerned because I had to replace the stock clutch on my 08 WRX because something caused it to burn up with less than 6,000 miles on the car. I'm worried that there might be something wrong with the car that is causing the clutch to slip against the pressure plate while driving.

I had a stock flywheel (2004) resurfaced at NAPA machinist shop on some sort of rotary grinder. The guy took about 0.005" of the surface material. He also mentioned that he had to disassemble the flywheel to put it on the grinder.
Is the dissassembly of a stock flywheel fairly typical process? are there any potential balancing concerns? |

I have a 2005 JDM 2.0L. I need a clutch. From your experience what do you think is better for performance and light weight ? • Exedy Hyper Metal Compe-D twin plate clutch. http://www.nengun.com/exedy/hyper-me...n-plate-clutch • Carbonatics 2Carbon Plate clutch http://www.carbonetic.net/products/twinandtriple.html My car will put out 400whp on 93oct with 24psi. Do you recommend anything ells for a light weight ? Thanks |

Welcome to the world of puck clutches. Try to think of it as a good thing like a turbo blow off hiss, or straight cut gear whine. It's a feature.

Looks like a lot of people are having grinding/chatter problem with lighter flywheel (or resurfaced flywheel), which is very annoying. Figured I would post the link if it hasn't been done.

First let's talk about chatter. This is something felt, and not so much heard. Clutch chatter is usually from the interaction of the friction surfaces (as long as everything else is ok). For instance the replacement discs from Exedy which are made in their Thailand friction material plant seem to engage more harshly than the OE friction materials (assumed made in Japan). Deceleration noise (or other gear noises) occurs because of engine pulses being transmitted to the transmission gears. Of course the engine pulses (torsional vibrations) are influenced by a number of things such as compression, boost, timing, cams, etc. What normally helps to dampen these torsional vibrations out are the springs in the clutch disc and the heavy weight of the flywheel. In the case of the 06 thread you reference, keep in mind that the Exedy aftermarket replacement clutch is different from the stock clutch. The stock Subie (Exedy manfactured) clutch conforms to stricter standards and specifications. The OE clutch has a "wide angle damper" design which may or may not be the case with the replacement part. I don't know the exact details in this case without looking at the parts, but we have seen this all the time. Just because it says Exedy doesn't mean it is the same as OE. In some cases the automaker prevents the clutch manufacturer from offering the same part on the aftermarket, since they have a lot invested in testing, tuning the dampening, etc so they can only offer a similar part. Sometimes the clutch manfacturer changes the design on their aftermarket replacement parts to save costs. A lightened flywheel can contribute to gear noise (there are several different types besides decel, btw), but you also have to consider what disc is being installed and that goes both ways. Also consider what changes have been made to the engine and tuning. |

Spline Question.
I am sorry if this has been covered but I have not been able to find the answer.
I'm in the market for a new clutch and flywheel, it seams there is a little confusion between the sites I've been through. I have a 2002 wrx 5mt. what is the input shaft spline count? I have seen 23 & 24. I just want to verify prior. |

I know a few have touched on this subject, but my situation is a bit different. I recently replaced my oem clutch with a Spec stage 1 and resurfaced my OEM flywheel. From the beginning, the clutch has been severely chattering. I took the thing out a week ago and tried to get spec to help me. But they wanted me to send the whole assembly to them in alabama, I live in kansas city. I also go to school in Iowa, so this just wasn't going to work for me to be without transportation to and from school. All they really told me was the hotspots were normal and it shouldn't be chattering. Now they refuse to even answer my emails.
So I cleaned all the surfaces (the pressure plate and flywheel had some hot spots but they were superficial). It was a bit better for about 20 miles. I did not see any obvious contamination from oil or grease, but I can't fully rule that out. I am thinking the fly is warped, but I have no way of finding out until I take it out again. Advice? |

Hey i have a question... What is the difference between the flywheels for the Pre 06/01 Build WRX and the After 06/01 Build WRX? My WRX is a 05/01 Build and I was going to buy a used fidanza flywheel but it was off of an WRX that was built in 2002. Is it physically different and what on either the engine or transmission makes them not interchangable?

Obviously not a clutch expert so seeking feedback and opinions from more experienced minds.
I read the warning about buying too much clutch. However, is it mechanically acceptable to buy too much clutch with the idea that your car will "grow" into the clutch? I have my motor and tranny out and I am replacing the clutch. I am going to go with a higher HP setup next Spring. I don't want to redo the clutch work only six months down the road. Thanks. |
